Hi everyone,

Im just about to do a gearbox and front diff oil change on my 997.1 manual.

Does anyone have any leads on where to get the recommended Mobilube PTX 75w90 oil, approximately 5lt in total needed.

I can only find 20lt drums at the moment.

Any information gladly received

Thanks

A word of warning.

My 2006 C4S has 2 fill holes to reinstall new gearbox oil.

You remove both bolts and fill through the top untill it runs out the lower.

Do not fill to top as you will then have 2 lt too much oil in your gearbox.

I think its only 2006 builds that's got this but best to know.

Good luck.

Mark.

Thanks for the reply, was really wanting to stick with original spec though.

The search goes on

Thanks Mark

I knew to fill up to the lower fill plug, wasn’t aware to fill using the top fill hole.

Did you manage to find Mobilube PTX ?

Opie's list for Porsche Approved Gearbox 75-90 only shows Shell's fully Syn version in 20 L buckets, but they have many more inc M1 SHC @ https://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-90-gear-oil.aspx

Probably best to go on the spec required rather than an M1 variant, if it's anything like the engine oil they change the name every 12 months or so .. marketing sh1t, I suspect .. [8|]

cheers, Maurice

Looking at the specs, they are all slightly different to the original PTX oil.

I‘ve read mixed reports on various oils, but the PTX seems to be the best in that particular gearbox and diff.

Just can’t believe no one sells it in 1 or 5lt bottles!

Im thinking about buying a 20lt drum and selling the surplus.

think I need 2.9lt for gearbox and 1.2lt for front diff.

so I could decant it into 4 x 5lt jugs and sell the other 3 ??

I’ll keep searching.

Andrew,

I think that you should be able to purchase smaller quantities of gearbox oil from a Porsche dealership. I doubt that it’ll be cheap but at least you’ll get a 10% Club discount.

Thanks Jeff,

I contacted OpieOils directly regarding the mobilube PTX and am following their recommendation, Motul Gear 300 75W90 fully synthetic for gearbox and differentials.

I will report back with my review on the oil shortly, It is due to arrive today.

It might not be exactly the original oil, but then again on a 14 year old 997 4S, I'm not 100% sure that the original oil is in the gearbox / diff now ?

If the oil is factory fill Mobilube PTX it will be 14 years old and 70k miles old, my guess would be new oil will be an improvement.

Watch this space

So after changing my gearbox and front diff oil to motul 300 gear my 1st and 2nd gear shift when cold has definitely gotten worse.

Smooth as silk once warmed up but not good at all when cold.

I intend to buy 20litres of Mobilube 75w90 PTX and split into 4 x 5litre jugs if anyone is interested in buying one of the 3 spares ?

hopefully the mobil will be as good as they say it is for cold shifts 🤞

Anyone interested please just message me - thanks

just looking to charge cost price

Hi, old thread I know but I was wondering whether you bought the 20lt tub and have any remaining/

Thanks
