Cabriolet Hood Treatment

After owning 3 coupes I’ve made the plunge for a 991.2 cab. I’d be interested to hear recommendations regarding best products for cleaning / protecting the hood and how often this is necessary.

Thanks in advance.

Used this for many years with great results.

FABSIL Gold
1st Give hood a really good wash clean and allow to dry.
2nd Apply Fabsil with a brush as directed on tin.
3rd Wait for it to rain and stand back and admire the beading[:)]

PS Do not be tempted to purchase a spray on product. Not only will it not cover as well but it finishes up all over the windows and paintwork.
More than one type of Fabsil. Make sure you buy the GOLD

An often asked question, normal replies are Autoglym or Renovo who both do products to clean, re-colour and waterproof the hood (different products for each operation). I used the Renovo for my 968 cab when I had it, used the shampoo with their stiff sponge, took a lot of hosing to get all the soap off but cleaned it really well. The colourant is thinner than water and gets everywhere so you need to mask up thoroughly, follow the instructions (especially about not folding the hood for at least 24 hours after colouring - you get white fold marks!!), have a rag in your hand while applying as it's easy to get off the bodywork/glass while wet and a PITA once dry! I also used their sealant, although many use Fabsil Gold (which is purely a sealant). I did the full clean and colour twice in the 8 1/2 years I owned the cab, but used the sealant about every 2 years - previous owner told me he Fabsil'd it every year.

First of all, congratulations on your 991.2 cab - lovely!!

All good suggestions above but being a bit OCD about these things, I would take a slightly different route: I'd be inclined to leave doing anything until the warmer/drier weather arrives and then go with one of the new Nano coating fabric treatments, like G-techniq I1 V2 Smart Coat - which is also suitable for convertible roofs.

Note: The following does require the vehicle to be left to dry in a garage/carport, so if that's not possible or the car's in daily use, one of the previous suggestions would probably be more suitable.

1) First, give the car/roof a thorough wash with a ph neutral car shampoo.
2) Gently scrub the roof, with a nail brush to remove any embedded crud.
3) Thoroughly jet wash off all traces of shampoo and crud (and finish a wash of the remaining car), before leaving it to dry.
4) Once completely dry, use G-techniq Tri-Clean spray (diluted 1:10 with distilled water) and clean micro-fibre cloths, to completely clean the entire roof (the aim here is to remove any traces of contamination, that a wash doesn't pick up).
5) Remove any overspray from surrounding areas with a clean micro-fibre.
5) Once again allow the roof to dry thoroughly, for at least 72hrs before vacuuming off any lint and commencing the Nano-coat treatment - good preparation is the key to success!
6) Apply I1 V2 Smart Coat by spray and (wearing PVC gloves) work it into the fabric, until it's throughly saturated.
7) Gently wipe any excess off the roof, without applying too much pressure (you want it to be soaked but an even treatment).
8) Remove any overspray from surrounding areas with clean micro-fibre cloths.
9) Allow the coating to dry for 24hrs before exposure to water.

This sounds like a long-winded process but in reality, the bulk of the time is leaving the roof to dry and the physical work takes only a few hours.
