Car kept outside

Hi All,
Unfortunately I don’t have a usable garage and constantly worry about my pride of joy sitting on the driveway and open to the elements. Obviously I could buy a cover but is it really necessary? Do any of you have an option on how robust these cars are when left outside all year round. I have a 2010 997 so not ancient but old enough to want to keep her in good nik. Any thoughts appreciated. Many thanks, Gavin.

My 996 is kept outside all year round (or at least has been since I've owned it - approx 5 years). I regularly drive mine whatever the weather. The only things I do are to keep it washed and waxed and remove any bird mess or tree sap as soon as I see it. Other than that, because it's used regularly (most days a week - prior to lockdown) then I have no issues. During lockdown I use a trickle charger and try and get out when I can - supermarket run etc

Probably one of the reasons many people keep their car garaged is that they are either very high value or have restricted mileage classic car insurance that requires the car to be garaged when kept overnight at their home. That's the case with my 996 insured at a very reasonable cost with Classic Line.

If you do decide to get a car cover, perhaps you should ask for recommendations as I have heard some do more damage than if they had not been used!

If my car was not garaged I wouldn't be worrying about it. For many years I have seen a 997 parked all the time on a fairly busy sideroad in Burford and it does not seem to have done it any harm, likewise for the last 7 years my daily driver has had to be left on the drive as the Porsche has the garage, and providing it is occasionally washed/waxed there have been no problems. Like James above, my 996 gets used all year and no problems from this have arisen.

Hi
I’ve kept all my Porsches outside and have always used a Porsche cover from the main dealers - ( got a bit of a collection now ??)- there are several good alternatives on the market though personal choice
The cars are robust but bird droppings/ tree sap the main worries - the covers are a bit of a pain as I always wash and dry the car before every covering ( drive dry when possible or leaf blower on brakes etc when not ) - not an option to clean every time in if daily driven and dirt will obviously scratch as cover moves in wind . I also put a trickle charger on and one of those dehumidifier blocks inside and cars have always been 100% - covers can mist the clear coat of the paint but these can be buffed out if your precious ( as I am )
security can also be an issue but I have closing gates so cars hidden from view but a thing to consider
good luck

Another good reason for using a cover: protects window seals and interior from UV damage (more of a problem for older cars), and I'd agree with previous view that it protects the car from prying eyes. My car has been covered for nearly 14 yrs with few problems...not aware of scuffing, but it's white so not so noticeable. Covers last about 5 years before the weather and UV gets to them!

Nope, not considered a cover - for me, I use the car most days so figure putting on or taking off a cover would just be a pain. Eventually I hope to get it in the garage, assuming I can ever get my better half to part with the piles of accumulated junk that apparently we "NEED" to keep... :)

Yeh good point! Also, everyone says it has to be perfectly clean when you put the cover on so that’s also difficult with daily use. My wife made me turn our garage into a kitchen extension!!

My cars live outside. I have them ceramic coated on all surfaces, wash them regularly with appropriate products to suit the ceramic coating and use a top up product every 6 to 8 weeks. As said above, bird droppings get removed and tree debris like leaves etc are removed. With the coating applied correctly, these contaminants don't reach the paint surface.

This is good to know! I have kind of borrowed my husbands car port to store hay and other horse care items. As all the cars are ceramic coated then he wont need it back!

My builder didn't get to finish the garage we're having built before Christmas, so the car's sat outside in all weathers.

One day, when he's finished it'll sit inside. [:D]

The previous owner had it coated using Gyeon(?) a few years ago but I am guessing it will need a good seeing to later this year!
