Cayman 981 CTEK Car Charger Battery Connection (Outside)

Long time lurker on the forum so hi!

As per the title I have a Cayman 981 GTS which due to lack of use is showing low battery warnings. I've bought a CTEK Car charger and intend to directly connect it to the battery (well positive and negative to another ground point) due to the cigarette lighter not staying live when the car is locked.

At the moment I can't garage the car but I'd like to leave the batter charger permanently connected. How do I route the cables out of the frunk so that I can close the frunk and lock the car? ( and still keep it weather tight)

You can route the cables up near the screen washer fluid bottle. There are a few plastic pieces that join in that area so you can squeeze a cable out that way.

Welcome ...

Route the charger lead `through` - next to the nearside washer nozzle

Connect the earth to the M8 insert in the nearside suspension turret top

Many thanks for the very quick and helpful responses! I'll have a look tomorrow in the daylight, I may be back if I can't figure it out ;)

I have an extension lead on order, it'll be here early part of next week. I know it won't be long enough to stretch to the garage where the mains will be.

Couple of questions ..

[ol][*]The connector on the CTEK isn't big enough for an M8 thread, did you drill / cut it?[*]Did you rub off the paint on the ground at the suspension point?[/ol]

David,

If you cut a slot in the eyelet you should be able to spread it sufficient to get the bolt through. The bolt thread should make the earth connection, but just make sure that the underside of the bolt head is bare metal. The charger should indicate an error if it’s open-circuit.

Jeff

1 - no, I enlarged the eyelet with a file

2 - no, just lightly abraded with emery / sandpaper and added a washer under the M8 bolt head

The connectors in the two pictures are on different 981`s ... the first on my CS which was the standard CTEK connector, unfused and using M6 eyelets.

The second on my GT4 is a fused connector with M8 eyelets, the cable is also slightly longer than the M6 item. This lead is available from Frazerparts ... Porsche battery status & condition monitor for use with all CTEK battery chargers (frazerpart.com)

Also available is an extension lead ... Porsche Charge-o-mat CTEK 2.5m battery charger extension lead and cable (frazerpart.com)

Mine's all wrapped up for winter so can't give a definitive answer but seem to remember finding a smaller ground towards the centre of the car and then used the original, untouched, connector with a 10mm nut. FWIW, I also recall the stud on the positive post being an unusual thread. The 10mm nut needed some "persuasion".

think I mentioned on a few links take the O piece and cut a small part out to form a C that way you only need to slacken off the bolts ..job done

All done and working.. thanks everyone for all the help, really appreciated! (Need the extension cable to use it properly but it'll do for now)

One last question, I thought the 981 Cayman batteries were AGM but I can't see it anywhere on the battery?

How do I know if I have an AGM battery? Now, batteries of the gel-filled lead-acid type will have “Gel-Filled” written on the label. And then, the AGM lead-acid batteries' labels are supposed to mention “AGM” or in full words- “Absorbed Glass Mat,” or terms like: “dry cell,” or “sealed regulated valve,” or “non-spill,” or “valve regulated” on the label.

As it's a Banner, I'd assume it's standard fit, so should be AGM. Does it have the Porsche label on the other side?

Must admit I didn't look at the other side, I'll have a look when I stick in the extension lead in.

If your Cayman has the Stop/Start functionality (and it should) you will have an AGM battery.
