Hi Arnie ,

welcome to the club. I’m based in North East Lincs so not far away. What’s your wheels?

regards,

Dave

Wheels, ah good question.

I have 4 wheels sitting underneath a very reluctant 1973/4 911 targa body.

Engine is in the garage somewhere? It never fired up. Turned though.

I found some head nuts in the valve covers. This is apparently typical, so reading various pieces, managed to drop it and it is now on a stand, and stripped the top end off. Don't know quite what I am doing, hence joining the club.

If you have any tips, I would love to hear them😊.

i am in killingholme

Hi Arnie,

now that sounds like you’ve some work on your hands there. Have you joined the model register? If not do that and I’m sure there will be some folks on there that can help. I‘m based in Cleethorpes so not far away. Good luck with it all, I’ll be interested to know how you get on with it.

Yes,

if you go to your profile you can yourself under the model of your car as well. That way you'll be included in anything that specific to that as well. Also, if you search on the forums under the model that will help you too.

regards Dave

Cheers Dave,

I tried beforehand, however, I had no VRN then. It has now come through, and I have completed it on my profile.

i am having difficulty with the website though, trying to find the forums and admin etc.

Hi,

Yeah the website is a bit clunky until you get familiar with it. Are you on Facebook? there are some of the groups on there as well. You might find that a bit easier.

Hi Arnie

sorry it is a bit late answer, looking to know how things work

We would like to introduce ourselves: John Lacey, living in South Elkington; just outside Louth, and Jacques Rousseau, living in Grantham, we are your Joint Regional Organisers.

We are new to this role, however, with the support of all members, we see the opportunity of rekindling actions and ideas. We would like to be seen as totally inclusive of all members and therefore eager to know what are your expectations.

I hope you received the introduction letter

we are working together to plan and set up a program for 2021 and if possible a zoom meeting

your project look fantastic and it will be interesting to follow with your update

stay safe for now and we are looking forward to meet you in person

Jacques

Thanks Jacques, I only acquired it last year, was hoping to gleam knowledge from the group about getting the engine working, don't know enough to do it myself yet. Is there anyone local who would be willing to have their brains picked at all? Regards. Arnie

Hi Arnie

the last engine overhaul I did was a 20 cylinders and 9000 HP [:D] ( Navy )

i worked on cars engines too, during free time or depending of problems,

just a though : if your engine rotated correctly by hand, that already something, after to do the overhaul , there is the point of special tools to get (removal of cylinder heads, connecting rods and pistons etc.. ) All depend if it is needed to do a complete overhaul.

but I am sure we discuss about it ,

you can join us on december 16 on zoom, I hope someone will know, but at least we will have the pleasure to know each other

Kind Regards

Jacques

Hi Arnie,

Welcome!

I live a bit further south than you near Coningsby. I do have 23 years of experience of 911 engines and have become quite good at dismantling them, but have not fully rebuilt them! A very good starting point is Wayne Dempsey’s book “How to build and modify Porsche 911 engines”.

It does now depend how much work you intend to do and how competent a mechanic you are, but you will need some specialist tools that you can either buy or borrow. Under normal circumstances I would suggest meeting up, but not at the moment with COVID restriction.

There are a couple of forums that may be of help such as DDK and Impact Bumpers, where members detail their rebuild experience.

What state and indeed model of 911 Targa do you?

Hope this helps.

Regards

ian

Hi Ian

thanks for the contact.

it's a 1974 911 targa in 70's brown.

I have Dwayne's book, and on th ddk forum.

Although it turned over when I got it, it never started.

I have stripped down the top end of the engine, and taken off the piston and cylinders ( as I found several lose head stud nuts) So the book advises replacing the studs. this is in the engine shop, having the cams and pistons inspected. I am hoping after this. the new case savers get put in, and I will then be able to attempt to rebuild it.

i have no experience doing this, the nearest is my vw beetle.

Any help would be appreciated. It would be great just to hear the engine going!!

Arnie

Hi Arne,

I take it that the engine is a 2.7 with magnesium cases, hence your fitting of case savers?

I have a 1975 2.7S engine on an engine stand in my garage, as I replaced it many years ago with a 3 litre for racing.

Are you having your case done locally?

Happy to help if I can.

Regards

Ian

Yes, I believe it is a magnesium case (although I don't know how to check this?)

I have looked online on how to clean this and possibly paint, but there is a lot of contradictory information, and no real conclusion on this. Would love to clean it up while it is lying on the floor.

A local engineering shop is just putting a couple of piston rings on (When I receive them in the post). Then hopefully he can machine in the new case savers.
