Leaky Macan...

We have fallen victim to the leaky Macan sunroof syndrome and our 2016 Diesel S has been to two of our local Porsche Centres, but neither of them have been able to cure the problem.

Because of the long lead in times, lower servicing price and the fact that they could provide a courtesy car, my wife’s Macan was booked into a new Porsche Centre that has just opened in our region for its two year service as opposed to our usual and more local Centre who were booked up for some weeks and didn’t have a courtesy car available.

Prior to taking the car to the new Centre and following some heavy rain the passenger and drivers foot wells became absolutely soaking and we had to fax the car out. Furthermore my wife drive the car and when going down hill more water splashed out over her feet.

I told our sales guy at our usual centre who are due to supply me with my own new car imminently and he told me to bring it in straight away and they would see if they could at least get it watertight for us. What is more they kindly lent us a demonstrator Macan. They told me that they had cleared the the drains but the car was still letting in water, so suggested that they keep it undercover and we should use their demonstrator until the car went to the other dealership for the service and they could repair it there under warranty. They told me to tell the other Centre to call them so that they could tell them what they had done.

The car went for its service and when I went to collect it I was told that the leaks had been cured and tested. What is more the service receptionist told me that they had discussed the problem with the original centre to ensure that the problem was dealt with.

We have now had some more heavy rain and the car is leaking like a sieve and the interior is soaking wet once again. Our original centre understandably are less keen to deal with the problem but have said that they could see the car in five weeks time. What is more they told me that they didn’t have a conversation with the other centre.

The dealer that had the car last is now procrastinating as to when they can see the car because of the latest lockdown, in the meantime because the car doesn’t fit in our garage, the car interior is deteriorating.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem and if so, please can you share how you got the issue resolved?

Many thanks,

Martin

I'd get Porsche GB at Reading involved, both OPCs answer to them, get Reading to arbitrate and arrange for one OPC to take responsibility and see it through.

After some a considerable time as well as a number of calls, emails and texts, I didn’t seem to be getting anywhere, given this I thought that I would try Porsche Assistance as the car is still under warranty, and wondered if that might be way of getting the car taken to one of the Porsche Centres and getting a courtesy car.

The guy from Porsche Assistance arrived within the hour and was fabulous, he couldn’t have been more helpful, he quickly diagnosed that the fault wasn’t the drains and that the sunroof seal had failed. He was surprised at how wet the interior was and said the car shouldn’t really be used as there was probably water under the floor which could effect the car’s electrical system. He wasn’t able to offer a courtesy car because the car had already been to a Porsche Centre about the problem and it was effectively there responsibility, but he then spent the best part of an hour on the phone going between the two Porsche Centres trying to find a way forward. It turned out that he was a Porsche fan and had until recently owned a 997, he certainly knew his stuff.

Eventually we heard back from the Warranty Advisor from the new PC that had serviced the car and he admitted that there had been a breakdown in communications and the sunroof seal should have been replaced, they even told me that one was ordered when the car was last with them but for some reason or another it was not fitted. Given this, the car is going back to them this morning and they have found a courtesy car for us to use for the time being.

i hope that they can find a solution as we love the car otherwise and I shall keep you advised of our progress.

Having thought that our tedious leaky sunroof issue had been cured, our Macan became victim to the dreaded failed transfer box iand went into our local Porsche Centre for this to be replaced under warranty, only to be told that (unbeknown to us) our sunroof is in fact still leaking.

Furthermore, within minutes of receiving our phone call and despite our concerns a driver from the dealership arrived at our home with the car saying that they needed their courtesy car back.

They told us that that they couldn’t book our car in for the necessary repair at this time as they are too busy. We were previously told not to use the car because it was unsafe as the area that was wet contained electrical wiring, however, this time the dealer told me that it should be okay to use until they could book it in (possibly six weeks). Given that we were told previously that we shouldn’t be using the car, I asked if he could confirm that in an email to which he politely declined.

In desperation, I spoke to a very helpful lady at Porsche GB who has promised that we will get a call back today. Fingers crossed...

Ironically, we were just thinking of ordering a new Macan, however, we are now reconsidering this given all of the problems that we have had with this car. It really is a shame because we love everything else about our Macan except these irritating faults.

That’s a really sorry story Martin and I do hope you can get a positive result.

I find it particularly odd that they cannot fit you in for 6 weeks to sort out what is an ongoing issue that they should have solved first time round. What is really galling is you have an order in for a GT3 with them so I would have expected then to fall over backwards for you.

I am interested to read about you visit to the 'new' PC as that is the closest to me. I need a first service at the end of the year and will certainly shop around.

Both common issues
Roofs can leak and creak glad mine doesn't have a glass roof to be honest.
Transfer boxes should be done under extended warranty.
Good luck in the fixes.

Thank you for your good wishes, I heard back from my local Porsche Centre who have booked it back in on the 14th March, needles to say it won’t be going back to the Porsche Centre that was supposed to fix it last time.
Fingers crossed it gets fixed this time...

I have a 2019 Macan with pan sunroof and have the same cursed issue.
I was told the leaking was not covered under my extended warranty (Mid Sussex Porsche)but they would gladly sort it for £1200 !!
I find that the trough across the front of the sunroof that the small wind deflector collapses into when shut collects water and this leaks into the car down the door hinge posts.
The drains work fine from the primary / front trough.
Any ideas ... is it a new seal ....or should the deflector trough drain into the front trough ?
Thanks.

That does not sound reasonable. I could understand blocked drains not being covered but if the seal has failed I would expect that to be. A call to Porsche GB could be in order.
Very refreshing to see you quote the actual OPC concerned I've never understood why the majority of contributors are so reticent. This thread with its "new centre" is a classic example, what's wrong with calling it "Stockport OPC"?

Temp fix that helped me .
Leaks can lead to electrical issues so act now !

Thoroughly dry out the second/rear trough which houses the wind deflector at the front of the sunfroof when open,,and keep it dry.

Smear vasaline on any rubber seals that make contact to prevent water ingress.

I stuck gaffa tape over the joints of sunroof to roof and it obviously works but looks a bit naff.
Upon removal was left with sticky residue on the paint to remove, doh !
Dont try to use sunroof at all with tape could damage motors.

Took tape off after a week or so.
But after three weeks and loads of rain it is still has not leaked.

Good shout Greenman.
It was a temp fix until proper solution taken on to help prevent electrical gremlins. if you have to use the car or no garage.
