Identify unknown noise

Recently I noticed when idling, just because its quieter to hear it, a sound coming from the drivers side front happening about every 2 seconds, like the sound of some maybe electric motor/pump turning on for a second or so. Stops when the engine goes into stop at traffic lights for example.
I dont remember this happening a couple of months back and I wonder if its normal. Its hard to pinpoint exactly where its coming from except for the general area mentioned.
Does any one have a suggestion as to what it might be and whether its something I should worry about?
Thanks for any answers

I can only think of the radiator fan in the area of the front wheel arch.  Can be visually checked.
