Android Auto retrofit

I use my (android) phone exclusively in my 981. PCM is too dated. I connect via Bluetooth and use Waze, Sounds and Spotify. No problems with fitting, or a new unit that will not add value to the car. My phone will easily manage a 5 hour drive with sat nav and music, so no need for messy cables either.

Hi Everyone,

I am debating a retrofit of Android Auto into my 981 Cayman S. Has anyone done this? I find the PCM in the car to be "ok", however it would be really nice to have Waze and a few other more modern functions. I have found a place that can do the work, I have seen some kits online. However I do not feel to happy messing with the cars electrics. My concerns are for resale in the future, would it put off potential buyers or would it impact any chances of an OPC warranty?

Can’t help with the PCM replacement Callum but you can say goodbye to a Porsche Extended Warranty since non-original components [even the battery!] aren’t allowed.

Hi, I fitted an Android system to my 987.2. It was a fairly easy change with no changes to the existing cables or plugs. As long as you keep the old unit then returning to the original unit is straight forward if you wanted to.

With regards to the warranty, if an OPC wanted to check the operation of the PCM then they would need the original unit and have to fit it. This is why the warranty may be voided. I can’t see why the value would be effected if the next owner wanted to replace the original unit or if you replaced the original pre sale.

The Android auto runs through the PCM, you plug it into the back of the PCM unit. I suppose I could always have it removed, but this modification runs android through the PCM unit.

Whenever I have used bluetooth for audio, I have found the volume in the car has to be set so high, that it is deafening should I switch to radio without remembering to dial it back down lots - or have I not found the right setting yet?

Would love the CarPlay interface having come from an M4, this PCM for a 981 is very dated indeed.

I had my 2014 Cayman 981 S PCM upgraded to include Andriod Auto/Apple Play yesterday plus front and rear cameras to aide safe reversing and parking. The supplier Advance In-Car Technologies, an official VAG Retro Fit dealer in Poole, Dorset. They completed the work in one day. My objective was to retain full OEM functionality and appearance adding the latest technology and functions. I could have chosen a Pioneer or Alpine system and forfeited those original aspects but did not do so. The package I have is a bit cheaper than either of those options.

The upgraded system is simple to use. Engage Reverse Gear and the rear camera lights up the Infotainment screen. The forward camera is engaged by pressing the standard INFO button for three or four seconds. It also flashes up for a few seconds only when engaging Drive. Once paired with my Andriod phone it works wirelessly from then on. The Infotainment screen mirrors the apps on my phone so a simple touch opens a chosen app, Google maps or Wase as examples. Yet to try it out on a journey. One thing it does not do is to show a Navigation screen in the righthand side instrument cluster. This is a small price to pay for all the other benefits available. Will post again after I have used it thoroughly.

I have no personal connection with Advance In-Car Technologies but I can say they are very professional and the work is undetectable other than the new functions. The day before me a Porsche Panamera was upgraded and the following day a Macan. A company video is available on YouTube. For a bit more than the cost of one navigation upgrade at a Porsche Centre I have the latest in technology plus a bit more.

That is a really interesting post thank you, what I needed to read. I would be really interested to see how you get on with it. The map display on the instrument cluster is a small price to pay like you said. I recently had a visit to the cotswolds, had to use the dreaded phone holder on the dash for waze which really bugs me :ROFLMAO:

I too am looking for Android Auto to fit to my 981 Cayman and do not want to change the standard PCM with an aftermarket unit. I have found this which connects to PCM3.1 and sounds perfect but is nearly £500 without fitting:-

I have also spoken to GT One in Chertsey who service my porsche and they have fitted other cheaper systems but I am waiting for them to send me the details.
