VTS Woes

991.2 GT3 needed a VTS hard reset after it stopped responding. Dashboard out to get at it, leapt into life, let’s say £1500 but under warranty. Now, it’s happened again with 2 months warranty left to run.

What’s amazing is that taking the car onto the Isle of Skye, to the same location, appears to have initiated the failure in both cases. In the latest situation, the last known position was a car park where the position of the car is correctly marked but now the car cannot be contacted. It’s as if taking the car to that specific location has caused the software running in the VTS to hang up and only a hard reset (which I believe is a power cycle with a magnet held to the side) will fix. Problem is, on a 991, the VTS is mounted on the front firewall and the whole centre console and dash has to come out to get at it.

I can get it reset again under warranty but then what? Trying to convince the dealer that a hard reset is simply papering over the cracks is going to be difficult.

Well the obvious solution would be to get the VTS moved to a more accessible location. I think that some devices e.g. Garmin have a "secret" settable by owner reset location, which you just drive to and hey presto. Don't know if that applies to Porsche VTS, probably not.

I had a series of similar electrical issues with my first 991.1 Carrera S and regret to say that it was an uphill battle, taking nine months and letters everywhere, to eventually get an offer of a new car at a cost of the depreciation of the original. Porsche(D) seem to hang their dealers out to dry once the car is sold, Porsche(UK) seem to be a filtering system and the dealer has to pay for the solution before claiming it back from someone, probably Porsche(D). It was worth it in the end and the second car was much better, but not perfect, and I continue to live with its foibles. Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings but the trouble taken to get it sorted will be worth it in the end. I just hope that Porsche get their electronic sorted in the Taycan

I suggested moving it to a still concealed but more accessible location but the dealer said Porsche would not allow it. They are very secretive about this box, I assume it has power and ground, a connection to the CAN bus to monitor various things and an antenna. But who knows?
