Tyres and Blackcircles 15% discount on Michelin

Noticed that Blackcircles have a 15% discount on Michelin tyres so thought I would do some tyre shopping for my 987 Boxster Spyder (especially since the original Pirelli P Zero fronts are cracking).

I am not bothered by the amount of mileage that you get out of the tyres (as some years I am dip under 100 miles between MOT's) so likely that they would crack prior to wearing out.

Also the car is only used when we have good weather in Scotland so not too bothered about wet performance but does need to get me back home without spitting me in a hedge if I get some rain on a summer run.

Car is also out of warranty so no concern over getting N rating but don't want to compromise on handling. Also I do not do any track days so its purely road handling I want.

Looking at Blackcircles I have the options of:
PS4S - Not N rated
PS2 - N0 rated
Cup 2 - N2 rated

Does anyone know when the PS4S is going to be N rated as they are for the 981/718 ?

Any other recommendations?

George

Ps Know that tyre choice is a personal choice but want to make sure I am not throwing money down the drain if I don't go N rated

PS4S is the best option if you are not hung up on N-rating - it is the latest generation of tyre technology in terms of compound, tread pattern etc..
PS2 may be N-rated, but the tyre technology is dated (like the car).
Porsche will not backdate new tyre technology for previous models so PS4S will never be N-rated for 987 use. If it is N-rated in the size you require, it will be based on use with a completely different model in the current range so the N-rating is irrelevant.

This may be a new strategy from Porsche, but if that was the case, by now, there would be no N-rated tyres for 993s. Porsche still update the N list for 993s (specifically for 993) or at least did so a couple of years ago.

That said there were no winter N rated tyres on the list when I last bought some (although they kindly "recommended" some non-N rated winter tyres)

Think unless your car is still under the warranty scheme why would you not put the latest in tire tec model on your car ,it will still be a better tire than the ps2 .From all reports it is a fantastic grip the cup 2 is poor for wet handling .will see next year to what is available .The PZ on my 981 where not a good tire and yet PORSCHE approve it ,no decent rim protector wheel always look as it was about to come off the tire .

So Porsche dig out examples of every model of 993 - C2, C4, Turbo etc (and every other model in the back catalogue for that matter) and individually test tyres for type approval purposes, despite not getting anything out of all that effort? I think not.

What happens is that Porsche will type approve a specific tyre size as being N-rated - this means that if the front tyre for a current model Panamera (or some other model in the current range) is N-rated and is the same size as the back tyre of your 993, then that becomes an N-rated tyre for your 993.

What probably happened for you in the past was that Porsche had N-rated tyres for another current model (at that time) in the range (Boxster, perhaps) which coincided with the tyre size(s) for a 993, thus you have an N-rated tyre spec for the 993.

As another example, it is possible to get N-rated PS4S in 20" as this is the size used on the current 718 Cayman model. However, I cannot get N-rated PS4S for my 2006 987 Cayman in 19" as this is not a size used in the current range. Does this mean that the PS4S is unsuitable for a 987 Cayman. I think not.

I hope this helps to dispel the N-rated myths for older cars - give me non-N-rated high performance modern tyres any day rather than obsolete N-rated tyres from a decade ago.

Anyone need some paper for their fax?

Regards

Alastair
