Track Day Insurance

Hi Haider,

If you’re thinking of doing quite a few track days I think you should look into getting an inclusive insurance policy which is likely to cost far less. Specialist brokers like ClassicLine and ManningUK offer good value and comprehensive policies which include track day cover, so it might be a good idea to contact them for a quote.

Although I’m now with ClassicLine I was with ManningUK beforehand - both recommended, although there are others like the Club’s insurer Locktons whose quotes seem to be variable price-wise.

Hi,

Went on Porsche Track Experience - Warm-up really enjoyed it. Got the bug a bit of doing more track/training days. As I take my own car need to sort insurance. I got quoted for the day £325.64 with £2000 excess for a £17000 Boxster from Sports Alive. Other quote was £117.56 with £1178 excess and max labour rate at £80 an hour. I would have to pay the difference. I fancy doing a half day at Millbrook Proving grounds with an instructor. I like the Porsche Experience but want an instructor with me in the car telling me the racing line, braking, accelerating and weight transfer otherwise I would just do the 90 minutes for £295 with an instructor, Cayman S with an instructor. Any other insurers I should look at?

Thanks
Haider

Lockton say they will provided cover for approved track day events other than PCGB day but you have to ask them first. They also say that the new insurer is more lenient than Chubb used to be. Trouble is these day their administration is so poor that you would have to ask at least a month in advance to get a response from them. Their service has been truly dreadful recently and I'm seriously worried that they are an organisation that is failing.

Make sure you understand the fine detail of the policy too - I’m with Mannings (I think KGM are the underwriter?) and there’s a 10% excess on track days.

Will do, thinking about how to go about this as I want to learn how to drive than just turn up on track going in circles. Thinking whether it's best to to do a couple of days at Millbrook with ARDS grade A instructor. I also like the idea of a Porsche Experience 90 minutes in a Cayman S with instructor for £395. Once they allow instructors in cars that will be worth doing. Some how I need to learn racing line, braking point etc... I have been looking at some Driver61 tutorials.

Haider,

Once things get back to normal, for any track day you’ll be able to book an instructor who’ll give you an idea how best to tackle a lap if you’re not familiar with the circuit.

I am reconciled that this year has gone down as a damp squib. Hopefully next spring/summer will be much better. Last year I drove the car mainly on country roads - Peak District, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridge & Norfolk. I realised that you it's now big deal how ever much you hustle the car on the roads it is way more capable. That's why I thought this spring/summer I would learn how to drive on tracks. Learn is the first objective...
