987.2 Battery change

Almost embarrassed to ask this question, but I don't trust modern cars to be simple...

I may have to change the battery on my 2009 987.2.
Is this as simple as I hope?
With the car all switched off, disconnect the battery, earth first, replace with a new one and re-connect or is there a faff to go through to stop signals on the dash or worse?

There must be a simple procedure to follow, what is it please?

I asked the same question a while ago, not sure if it was on this forum.
I did not want to need to go through some complex procedure that needed to have error messages cancelled. The answer I got was to keep a trickle charger attached to the cigarette lighter socket. My charger is a 7A so enough to hold all the electronic memory in the car when the battery is disconnected.
I didn’t need to do it in the end, but I too was concerned that I would be stuck with error messages on the dash that required more research to resolve than the research required to avoid them in the first place.
 
On a UK 986, with the alarm siren, you have to switch the ingnition on, then switch it off but leave the key in the ignition, before disconnecting the battery. This prevents the siren from sounding. I am not 100% sure the same applies to the 987, but I always did it just to be sure.


Attached are the instructions for resetting everything after reconnection.

I'm sure someone else will be able to confirm or you can find something online but I think you need to have the key in the ignition; maybe set to Position 1? If you've got a battery conditioner, if you leave that connected maybe that would keep the system powered-up sufficiently?

I've changed batteries twice. First time was a disaster and the car 'lost' the function of some options. In particular I recall the heated seats stopped working. The car reverted to a 'factory ship' state and I had to pay an OPC half an hours labour to recode the car.

I think this was due to the lack of power over an extended period (I didn't rush changing the battery)

So, as suggested, maintain power to the car to be on the safe side. In a Gen 1 car the cigarette lighter socket in the centre console is 'on' all the time. Not sure if a trickle charger can provide enough current though.

I've changed the battery a second time, maintained power with a lab power supply, and all was fine

I must look! I assumed such an operation would get the 'Go to your Main Dealer Urgently', no owner would do such a task.

I'll have a read tomorrow.

Just ordered a new replacement battery for my 987.2, arrives Friday this week.

Looked in the Handbook (!) and on page 206/207 it simply says remove and refit, NO power maintenance, nothing, just disconnect and replace the leads.

Having just been through an irritating saga of replacing my Skoda's AGM battery and a forced dealer re-coding of the car, I am wary of this simplicity!

So, my plan is to:

Attach my trusty battery charger to the battery cables and tape them so to avoid big sparks and the chance of disconnection.
Release the cables, earth first then power.
Remove the battery.
Fit the new one (identical spec/size), refit the power lead, refit the earth.
Leave charger connected until the charge is 'zero', remove the charger.
Start engine and stare at the dash board for unwelcomed lights.

Now, what can go wrong?
 
That worked a treat, all done in 20 mins.

Engine turns over so quickly now, installed a lot more confidence as well as Ah. [:)]
 
Fingers crossed for this afternoon when I take my beloved Boxster (986.2) in for a new battery! Unfortunately it has let me down a few times recently when the engine doesn’t turn over but the dash lights flash and the side windows suddenly do a little dance ! My trusty Ctek charger had been doing it’s thing for the last few hours so I’m hoping she’ll start up to get to the local garage! will bear in mind the useful info about the siren, but is there likely to be a problem with radio (code) or anything else? ?? any info gratefully received...
 
Putting another battery across the terminals before removing the battery in the car keeps all those codes intact as the power supply has not been broken.
I would think that is what they will do to yours. Worked perfectly on my 987.2
 
Thanks for the info. All worked ok with no drama luckily, I told the fitter about ignition key trick for the siren, and he just whipped out the battery and dropped in the neW one, and a few minutes later we had the engine burstimg into life and the radio was still on the same preset ???? So happy days! A nice top-down drive followed despite Friday afternoon traffic! ????
