Can anyone recomend any independants for serviceing ( or any to avoid !!!! ) in the St Albans area
I'm getting the impression my local Porsche centre veiw me as a "cash cow ".......
thank you

I agree with Cliff, JAZ at St Albans is the place to go. Steve is very knowledgable and they have a good team of technicians.

Hi Mike

In my experience Jazz was similarly priced to Hatfield. However I have used Porsche East London for my last service nearly 2 years ago and they collected and returned the car to Barnet. They were cheaper and I did not get any calls to have the air conditioner regassed etc etc .They certainly did not treat my as a cash cow. They are due to do my car in October and again will collect and deliver to my home. Depending on where you live you might consider them as they are owned not by Porsche but by Jardine.
However I know that Jazz are good and they did some diagnostic work for me last year. I thought I might have an oil leak.
Regards

Jonathan

Without doubt Steve Winter at Jaz. He services my 911 SC, 993 and GT3 MK II
Steve and Claire run a great operation but they do get booked up early

I’m surprised not to have seen RPM Technic mentioned in the replies so far. I’ve heard good comments from a number of Porsche owners, as I also have about Steve at Jaz. However I’ve been going to Neil Bainbridge at BS Motorsport for well more than 10 years now for everything (except replacing the Cab Roof) on my 964 and have absolutely no complaints and no reason to go elsewhere.

I still use JZ over at Kings Langley (having used them for the last 15 years or so with one exception). I tried Jaz once before and should probably try them again given the comments above (had the car serviced there and needed new front discs and pads but they had none in stock - asked for them to call me when they were in, but never heard from them again (even for a service reminder) ....hence I went back to JZ).

Hi,
I am surprised by your comment that we at Jaz Porsche are similarly priced to Hatfield. I recall we did one job for you. Our labour rate is substantially cheaper for instance. We have just also quoted on an exhaust flange rebuild for a client with a 981 Boxster. Hatfield quoted £1600 . Our price using stainless steel fittings is £208.49 plus two small clamps at £18 each if needed. We would always try to be competitive on price but will never be "cheap" for the sake of quality.
regards
Steve Winter

My local Porsche Dealership had quoted me £1623. to do some work on my Cayman's exhaust , i contacted Jaz in St Albans & they have quoted me
£344
Now i realise the main dealer is always going to be the most expensive , but i think this sort of difference is excessive
thank you very much for the recomendations Guys

Hi Mike

I have to agree with you. I have been using Jaz at St Albans (formally Wembley) for years and their service costs are way below anything I have been quoted by my local Main Dealership. You don't get charged inflated prices for normal off the shelf service items that are universally available.
The service is also far more personable and you can actually speak to the human being working on your car if you have questions, rather than being filtered via the front desk and the service manager etc. The free coffee can have a huge price tag!

Hi,
Ive never had any major work done there but had a few odd bits (brakes rubbing, fixed jammed nearside fan on my previous 997). Was always really helpful and knowledgable. Always seem very busy and I’d happily put my car in with them, great hourly rates too.

Thanks
Adam

Hi,

Not used them yet, but going to use them to re-commission my 964. Matt, the owner, drove over to Berkhamsted to look at it and I had a chat with him for about half an hour. Seemed to really know his stuff, but also be very pragmatic in his approach I.e Rather than starting with a long list of things he could do to bring it back to showroom, he suggested doing the min. to get it through an MOT and then see how much more I want to spend and what were my priority jobs. He also has access to a trimmer who does targa tops and a paint shop.

I also asked on other forums and he got good feedback there.

Hope that helps.

Nick

I'm afraid to say that my experience of JAZ was not good and not on just one occasion either, long story which I'm not going to bore you with now. I swore last time to never use an Indy or main dealer again, the car has appreciated the proper care it's now received over the last 20 years from my own hands and those of my son who's an excellent tech. Whoever you use, check everything, don't take them at their word, only one person will look after your car properly and that's you.

Someone mentioned RPM Technik above and I can’t recommend them highly enough. Have been there a few times over the summer for various things and the service is first rate and the prices fair for the excellent quality of work done.

On one visit they worked until 10pm to get the car ready for a track day I had booked for the next day. That is genuinely going above and beyond.

I brought my first Porsche (996 C2) about 15 months ago and have taken it to JAZ Porsche ever since. They carried out a post-purchase inspection, including showing me over the car whilst it was on the ramps (which was a real education for a 'new to Porsche' owner), and carried out a major service and some other necessary work. Investing money into the car early has given me a wonderful (if somewhat curtailed) first year of ownership, and the (22 years old!) car flew through its MOT with no advisories a couple of months ago.

A friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable staff, with great customer service, I'm happy to recommend JAZ. I've been really impressed with them and the car is running beautifully.

I've used JAZ and RPM Technic and would trust my car to both. Both are good value, trustworthy and helpful. I have more of a relationship with one but it wouldn't stop me using the other.

(That said, mistakes do happen so I can believe that some customers of both businesses have had negative experiences)
