Air Flow Sensor.

Had the 3.2 serviced yesterday, all good apart from an advisory that the 'Air Flow Sensor' requires replacement. Looking at Tony Corlett's book it refers to possible changing the Motronic system
with a Motec one?
It already has fitted a SSI style exhaust.

Is this something that is readily available and worth doing, or should I stick with a standard replacement?

A Motec conversion will be expensive - it means a new ECU, new loom and at least some new sensors. IMHO pointless on a stock engine. Just replace the air flow sensor and call it good.

However if the engine isn't hunting on initial startup or stalling when pulling up to a stop it can sometimes be recovered by a good clean.
 
Thanks for the advice appreciated, and it does occasionally stall, so along with the omission issues I think I will replace.
I note that some suppliers do exchange units, is that a sensible option, or just buy new?

I would get new rather than reconditioned exchange. You should be seated when getting a quote from a Porsche Centre!
 
These havent been available new for about 10 years, exchange from Porsche at £579.65 + vat

Maybe try a Bosch Service Centre
 
I’d get it tested first to ensure it is the cause, before getting a repacment

Have a look at the Pelican and IB forums, excuse the non-technical description but these can read wrong due to wear on the copper wiper, this can be correct by adjusting its touch point:

Maybe also worth searching out a good used one where someone had rebuilt and modified their engine (IB and DDK forum.)

I have one but it not for sale as I want to keep all the bit I’ve taken off in case I one day sell my car and the new owners want to put most of it back to standard.

Hi Beaky, Good advice.

Update for info - Firstly I found the email from my local 'Porsche Centre' that offered membership to the 'Classic Register',
one of the benefits is 15% of parts. Booked it in initially for a diagnostics check, they discovered that at some time the 'air flow sensor' had been altered to allow a much richer mixture. Probably why in the past I had struggled at MOT's with the 'emission part of the test'. They were able to reset it back to the original settings, tested, engine running superbly apparently, passed with flying colours the MOT emissions test.

So I ended up with a labour charge, but no expensive bill for a new air mass sensor!
