Modern Piston Manufacturing Techniques

This is for the 993 GT2 RS but i could be used for any Porsche range of vehicles.

Jeff,
I have been a little blinkered with new engineering concepts of manufacture, been out of the game too long. I was still thinking 3D printing using plastics. The sky looks to be the limit on what designers can now achieve in intricacy.

Absolutely Ray. It's amazing what intricate structures can be constructed using the technique for a range of different materials.
 
Seeing that piston reminds me of the time back in the late 60s when I was an engineering student on a 'thin sandwich' course when I spent my 6-month industrial periods at the Western Region Workshops in Swindon. In the engine repair shop I worked alongside a couple of fitters who were overhauling one of the impressive Maybach MD655 1,250hp V-12 diesel engines used in the D1000 Western class locos.

The pistons on this engine had a detachable crown and the top of the piston body had a number of milled radial groves emanating from an offset axial hole to the bottom of which a pivoting telescopic tube was attached which in turn was connected to the main oil supply gallery in the block, the purpose of the complex arrangement being to provide piston cooling. Constructing such a piston these days would have been a straightforward job for a 3D printer.
