Temporary meeting replacement drive.

Hi to all R10 members,
It has been a long time since we have met up at the Sharnbrook due to the pandemic.
I have spoken to our RO and PCGB HQ about what we can do as a temporary replacement for the meets.
I have offered to run a Covid-19 proof drive.
The maximum is 12 cars.
Instead of meeting at the Sharnbrook the participants would meet up at a designated area, have a quick socially distanced beverage & natter and then follow a lead car for about ¾ of an hour to an hour and gather/park up again at a designated area (which could be where you started or somewhere different) have another natter then disperse.
There will, obviously, be stringent Covid compliant rules in place which includes a risk assessment that needs to be sent to the club HQ.
Oh, and you would probably be best bringing your own coffee in a flask as there would be no complimentary Tea/coffee.
I am willing to run this if enough of you are interested.
It is just to, hopefully, temporarily, replace the meetings safely, so that at least some of us are socialising again, even though differently to the norm. (potentially the new normal).
If you are interested, then please let me know asap along with your e-mail address and I will then give out the further details to those first 12.
As we can only accommodate up to 12 cars it will be first come first served sort of scenario but we could do the same for others if there are enough at a different date/time etc...

Initial dates we are looking at are 15th and/or 16th August to meet for start at midday.

Kind regards,
Gary

Hi Mike,
That's good to know but not doing anything yet, I want to see a positive response from members who are wanting to do it first.
Cheers

Great news Andy.

Please check the dates and confirm.

All,
If you can and want to do this send me your e-mail address to medlarstorm@yahoo.co.uk
for me to e-mail the finer details to you.
Remember we can only have up to 12 cars on a drive without having to apply for a licence.
Thank you all for your kind cooperation in advance.

Tricky, isn't it! I would love to re-engage with the club and attend events. I had panned to get to so many this year. I applaud your efforts to try to stage some kind of drive and natter event but honestly, I think it is still too soon. Especially as the numbers of new cases in England are going up not down. The driving would not be the problem but the nattering could be. From my observations locally (and online, even by Porsche people) there seems to be a difficulty in some people's minds as to exactly how far 2 metres is. This would make me feel uncomfortable, and I would not want to appear rude by telling anyone, they were standing too close. As I said at the beginning - it is tricky.

If it goes ahead, I wish everyone who attends a safe and great day. See you all on the other side!

Chris

Hi Chris,
I fully understand where you are coming from and I agree with you regarding the distancing.
This is why I wanted to organise this.
My intension is to have cars parked with a cars width between each car.
It will be my recommendation to bring foldable camp chairs that you would set up right in front of your cars and you chat from your chair.
When we are ready to embark on the drive you pack your chairs away and get back in your car.
Then follow in the convoy.
When the drive is done you can do the same again or even just leave.
If you wish to wear a face mask you can and if you feel it is necessary bring your own sanitiser. These will be the rules and anyone who can not abide by them will not be welcome which will be made very clear to all who wish to attend.
This will also be in the risk assessment that I will need to send to PCGB HQ.
However, if you still feel opposed to taking part then I fully understand and certainly don't hold it against you, it is entirely your choice.
For me, we have to start somewhere and I, indeed, want this to be as safe as possible.
Kind regards,
Gary

Thanks Gary

Excellent! You have clearly given this a lot of thought and what you suggest sounds quite practical and should be very safe.

Chris

Hi Chris,

Does that mean you would like to come along, if you do you will need to send me an e-mail to medlarstorm@yahoo.co.uk.
Completely your choice.
I have received some positive e-mails already but each drive is capped at 12 cars.
Kind regards,

Not having a ‘go’ at other members but I want to try to add ‘balance”. It increasingly feels a case that more mature members or those high risk are being most vocal and critical against informal meetings. It increasingly seems that even when a drive out is informal, under 6 cars, well planned to adhere to social distancing etc. sone still want to complain, criticise and/or be negative. No matter how politely expressed it is still critical and negative. Their comments variously refer to ‘breaking the government rules’, increased infection rates, media interpretation etc. to justify what feels like grumpy negativity. Unfortunately, I hate to say it but this has begun to sound to me as ’ritual retreatist’ behaviour with ‘big fish small pond’ tones and a touch of ‘sour grapes’. I may personally choose not to attend a drive-out just as I may choose to avoid Tesco, restaurants and pubs but I wish everyone else well who does it is their personal choice. Almost every other car club has been doing drive outs for weeks including TIPEC and other Porsche affiliates whose membership has rocketed over the last 2 months. I am also very aware that the sone of those members who are vocal against informal meetings are also happy to attend or promote track days (and use the fact that they are professionally organised as an excuse - so are pubs and supermarkets have you attended these or seen photographs?). I feel really deep empathy for those like me who are high risk or, like me, have lost loved ones. I think it is terrible for myself and others who are in the mature age group most at risk; but I would not want to begrudge or place negativity on those that do decide to informally organise drive outs, just as I do not prevent my 20 year old daughter from going out (she follows the rules). I may be mildly jealous but I don’t try to stop her or constantly police her actions - she is 20 - to do otherwise would just be grumpy, jealous behaviour on my part. Surely the true ‘spirit’ of a members club is to support and encourage passion as a prerequisite more than to police and condemn? In these negative and depressing times please can people try to be more positive. encouraging and supportive?

Hi Jose,

Thankyou for putting your positive views across.

I, personally, have not felt there has been any negativity but understand concerns members may have during these strange times.
In fact the response is quite positive.

I am truly sorry to hear you have lost loved ones through this terrible time and my heart, thoughts and sympathy do go out to anyone who has lost loved ones.

We must take everyone's perspective into account and remember that it is each members own free choice if they would like to partake, or not, in anything the club has to offer.
I also welcome anyone's comments and/or concerns to help build the safest possible event I can however big or small.

Rules will be set out that must be adhered to by the letter.

This will enable more events to be made available.

Thankyou, once again Jose, for your valuable input, it is greatly appreciated.

Kindest regards,
Gary
