Buying a used Cayenne - advice please

Hi all, I'm a 911 996 owner and looking to change my wife's SUV. I am looking at the Cayenne - probably a 2016 Diesel, but wanted to ask if there is anything particular I should look out for and any other generic ownership advice. Many thanks.
 
Just bought a cayanne early 2017 blind from Aberdeen for the wife and she is very happy.
one thing i hadnt realised was that they had updated the pcm (to 5.0?) at some point and i suspect a few other bits. Not sure when but think it was arround 2016-17. Among other things it brings live traffic and online nav updates included in the connect plus subscription.
i was dithering between a 2016 3.0 diesel and a low milage 4.2 diesel from an opc. Eventually went for the latter and very happy if somewhat astonished how quick a 2 ton diesel can be and how unlike an SUV it feels. It did come with new boots and 24 months porsche warranty which helped justify the price but at the end it had 90% of what i wanted.
Not sure about where diesels will be in 2 years but my reckoning was that a newer one would be better and the 4.2 appears more wanted than the 3.0. Cant believe the demand will go away and as it is euro 6 it is at least one group up from most of the european city requirements. It will mostly be used for 100mile plus journeys in the UK and long european runs so the range so the range and fuel consumption were a selling point.
I dithered for a month before pulling the trigger but what helped was making a list of my must have options, a second of nice to have and a third of not wanted.
can tell you more at end of next week when i have had a chance to give a long run.

I bought a New Cayenne in 2013, covered 95k miles and sold it in 2019. A brilliant car never had any problems. I put down a deposit on a new Cayenne S late 2018
and took a demo from my ops for a weekend. a great car but fuel consumption was dire about 16mpg around town and 24 mpg urban. i decided not to hand out 90K
for a car doing poor mpg.
I purchased a 2017 4.2 Cayenne S diesel early 2019 from an OPC. Superb machine but i have had to get the Transfer Case replaced, and recently I've had to get it recovered
as it went into limp mode due to the Diesel Particulate Filter. Was told by my OPC it was down to short journeys, i disagreed as I'm a time served Vehicle Technician and i dont
do short journeys as im aware of problems with DPF,s. I believe that the 4.2 Diesel Cayenne under normal driving and obeying the speed limits only reaches about 1200/1500 rpm
thus the car needs driven in manual mode maintaining engine revs above 2000rpm for 20/30 minute durations.
My first Cayenne had not got a DPF so consider your journeys prior to buying any Diesel Vehicle that has a DPF fitted.
My car is still under the Porsche Warranty , lucky me so also consider buying from an OPC.

i think that is what swayed me to my choice. I wanted the security of a car that had not been outside the porsche network.
BTW I can reccomend aberdeen as nice people to do buisness with.

WTR the DPF is there anythng to tell you it is regenerating?

Thanks for the replies. I also bought an S Diesel (4.2 Platinum edition) from OPC in Colchester. I felt the warranty justified the extra price and I will renew it in 2 years time. I've read about the Transfer box issues so hopefully that will be covered if it fails. Loving it so far, incredibly quick and yet returned 32mpg on a trip to France (1,000 miles).
 
I've got a 2017 Diesel S and suffered the transfer case issue. I say suffer but the symptoms were fairly minor - just occasionally a tiny juddering at walking pace speeds. Under warranty and replaced without question with an updated unit so hopefully no further problems. Other than that it is a fantastic multi talented vehicle. I've got air suspension and the sport/sport plus options and I'm amazed at how such a big vehicle can be hustled along when you feel the urge - alternatively it's a big comfortable continent crusher and when required it tows my 2 ton caravan with ease. Even economy is reasonable given the size and performance available.
 
Steve, did you post about your experience after your first longer run? Just thinking about looking for a 4.2D S myself so interested to hear owners views.

I have had three long runs in the thing and for a 2.5tonne SUV it is almost insane. The 40+ acceleration is just crazy and you have to be careful as you can be do 120+ before you realise it when overtaking. On three trips to Edinburgh it returned over 35mpg including some spirited driving through the borders from the A74 over to EDI (it was 39mpg before the turn off). The engine could be a bit quieter but I suspect that is deliberate - people dont buy Porsche for quietness.
I have air suspension which as I will use it for towing is a must. What is truly impressive is how it goes around corners as though on rails with no lean at all
Down sides - not much
The rear seats dont fold very flat
The entertainment system is a PITA,
Big omissions no Skip buttons on the steering wheel and no favourites for the telephone.
Apart from price I dont see the downside to the 4.2 the mpg is about the same and sometimes better I am told as you dont have to push it and it is way quicker.
