Mechanical advice for a 993 C4S - Revs high then low without lifting off

Hi,

My 993 has just developed a problem whereby when I accelerate the revs will go high (feels like clutch is not fully engaged) and then the revs will drop down without lifting off the accelerator or touching the clutch. I also think I smelt some burning. Has anyone had or seen this issue? if so could you advise on probable cause.

May thanks in advance. Tony

I think you are right - it's the clutch. Symptoms exactly match when mine went. The traditional test is to drive along an open road at 2000 rpm and floor the accelerator and watch the rev counter. Smooth rise = clutch good, needle waving about = knackered clutch. But I advise against bothering with the test because you will only wear out the last remaining shreds of clutch surface and prevent yourself from driving home or to wherever you have chosen to get your clutch replaced.

Tony - as Hacki suggests, maybe ask an admin to move this thread inside the 993 register section because more 993 people will see it there.

On cost it really does depend on who you get to do it and if they know the tricks to change a "4" clutch without dropping the engine down. I used an indie (who I was using for all work on my car at the time) and he disagreed with most (at the time) who suggested the 4 needed the engine dropping. He did indeed avoid having to lower it. That was about 2008 so probably others have learned the trick now. Not sure what procedure a PC would insist on using (although if you follow some of my other tales on here you would know why I don't use PCs, despite occasional attempts over the years).

Cost in 2008 was about £900. I'd be interested to know what people pay these days.

How many miles on your car? My clutch went at 30K (3k after I acquired the car). I'm still on the same replacement clutch now 70K miles later.

Thanks very much for the info.

I am told that the clutch was done just before I bought it @ 35K miles. It's got 78K on it now but I did store it for quite a while. I'll let you know prices when I get some quotes.

Cheers.
