If the 991 had sports exhaust that would be my choice. This example does not. The sound of the N/A car in the 991 model with a sports exhaust is simply unbeatable. Better than the 997 range and significantly better than any turbo model. Just listen to one and drive a car.
The 991 is a newer model, has better handling, more modern interior and is an easier car to live with day to day over the 997. Yes its slightly larger but its minimal on the exterior dimensions, But its much wider and comfortable inside so thats a big advantage.
I drove the 997.1 4S cab with 355bhp and loved it, then drove a 991 2S manual which was a significant step up with 400bhp and finally a 991.1 4S. The 991 4S PDK won it for me. The PDK marries with the 400 BHP engine beautifully. The biggest difference between the 2S and 4S is I liked the added weight over the nose which eliminated the front end bob I witnessed over fast undulating B roads in the 2S. Which for me was off putting. Obviously traction was far higher in the 4S, but this is only noticeable on wet, greasy or damp days. Which given the UK is a large part of the year! Although so far this year its been stonking.
Apart from the engine, exterior etc the other noticeable difference between the 997 and 991 cars is the ride comfort and rigidity on UK roads. The 991 in my eyes is quite a step up. A 997 with sports suspension on ( ie PASM ) is unusable on a normal B road, its simply too stiff on anything other than a flat road. The 991 is very usable in both normal and Sports ( PASM on ) .
The 991 N/A motor in the 4S or 2 S is more than enough power @400 bhp and a joy to drive. In my eyes its the right amount of power. With the Cab model having the roof down will enable you to fully enjoy the sound. The beauty of the N/A car in my eyes is the ability to enjoy the car, sound, handling at a lower threshold than the newer 991.2 or 997 Turbo models. Dont get me wrong they are great cars, but the ability to enjoy a car within UK speed limits is what many people miss when they jump into the more powerful cars.
The newer 991.2 S models are excellent and provide real punch out of a corner, they feel faster ( but in practice aren’t that much over the N/A car ) . I have driven the 991.2 GTS4 Targa and its a beauty. The engine sound is great in unison, until you drive the N/A car. Which for me won the day.
There are of course other subtle didferences between the newer 991.2 cars. Exterior styling changes, engine (ofcourse) and newer PCM with Apple Car play.
from your list, Drive both, the thrust of the turbo 997 model will no doubt be stunning but quick blips of power along the straights might soon get a bit boring. Along with a short lived licence and lack of sound....
... ( a bit tongue in cheek ). The interior of the 991 and comfort , handling is a big jump over the 997.
You really need to drive all models in your price range to see what best suits you and your needs.
After I bought a 991.1 my friend with a stunning 997.1 4S cab jumped ship and joined me in the 991.1 4S. He could not believe the difference and has not looked back.
No car is a bad car, and the beauty of the Porsche range is there is a car for everyone.
