Electric seat blues

My new (well, old) C4S has electric seats. The seat recline control on the passenger seat didn't work when I bought it. I thought I would investigate, bad idea. Took the control handle off (easy enough) and discovered that the problem was that the pin on the switch didn't stick out far enough to locate in the hole in the handle. Wasn't sure why. Mistake number one, I unscrewed the plastic cover on the side of the seat and gently prised it off. It came away leaving the switches in their plastic moulding. It came away because the switch moulding wasn't properly clipped into the outer cover. So all I need to do is clip it together properly and replace? Except you can't clip the switch moulding onto the outer cover because the wiring loom into the seat is too short to allow this to be done. Do I have to take the seat out to get at the loom from the inside and loosen it? Or what? ( I did discover a small cube of plywood behind the moulding which might have been used previously to push the switch moulding forward and allow closure of some of the lugs.
Any help would be gratefully received!

I have just taken a seat apart and for a number of reasons it would be easier to disconnect the battery and then undo the 4 floor bolts and un-clip the electrical cable and have a good look under the seat. The cable is normally long enough to remove this panel on the side and the cable may be caught up underneath. Certainly no blocks of wood on any I have looked at. Its not a difficult job but the seats are heavy. So watch out for scratches on interior and bodywork.

Many thanks Ian, I have managed to get it back together, but taking the seat out may be the answer if it happens again.
