New member looking to buy 997

Hello to all. I have just re-joined after a 2 year absence. I have a Macan SD as my day car but am looking for a 997 for fun and weekends. After sifting through the hundreds for sale I have only two left on my short list. Gen 1 Carerra 2S Cabriolet 58 plate 37000 miles Tiptronic for £26k and a Gen. 2 Careera 2 Cabriolet 60 plate 51000 miles PDK with Chrono Sport Plus and 19" wheels for £34k. My budget was £30k so I would be pushing things to go to the Gen 2, both are in exceptional condition but my question is "IS THE GEN 2 WORTH THE £8K EXTRA?"

I would appreciate comments.

Its amazing how different the same model can be. Gen 1 is a rawer car which I found quite endearing, with great driver feedback experience.
Gen 2, a very more refined & up to date car, due to this it’s little less (tiny bit) involving/rewarding to drive. One of the biggest drawbacks is the exhaust note is very muted and you get very little aural feedback when driving, soon fixed with an exhaust upgrade.
Theres of course another option to ponder in Gen 2 which is manual or PDK, the purists say manual, but for max speed with minimum fuss PDK wins every time. IMHO, performance cars reach a point they are too quick for a manual gearbox.
I have been lucky to own both a Gen 1 manual and a Gen 2 PDK, loved them both.

All the best

Steve

Hi
Having owned 997.1 manual and 997.2 PDK ,everything else being equal , i’d recommend the gen 2 - the engine is arguably less potentially troublesome ( waits for waves of disagreement !) and a major difference is that the PDK is worlds better than tiptronic .
if i recall the Nav and PCM system is quite a lot better in gen 2 - recall you could connect iPod - although both are a bit old school compared to latest ( don’t know how old your Macan is ? )
...and as noted above if you want a better sound on gen 2 get a sherkworks bypass that deletes the last muffler ( gen 1 did not have this hence better sound ) I think it’s around £800 approx and can be removed back to standard or installed in 1 1/2 hours
let us know which way you go

Agree entirely with Tony.
I've owned both and Gen 2 is the better bet all round. You should make your budget stretch to it if you can. [;)]

Clive

If your looking for a late Gen1 you will have no engine issues (eg IMS ) as will have the Gen3 bearing fitted so no problems there ,for me a GEN 1 as they sound better go just as well and there cheaper …………..only saying that as I have one

Thanks all for your advice. This morning a new ad appeared on Auto Trader and by midday I had inspected, test driven and purchased a Gen2 58 plate PDK with fsh 2 owners and 22500 on the clock for £29k. So I got everything I was looking for and within budget.
I need to update the SatNav and get rid of the few stone chips but that is all that is wrong.
Need to buy a wind deflector, wonder if the £150 non Porsche are OK?

On the wind deflector look on that popular auction site the non porsche ones don't fold so won't store in the car unless fitted also the 996 and 997 are the same so take your time you will find one. They make a big difference.

Congratulations sounds like a win win

I own a 992.2 cabriolet and agree with Clive.
Have a look at Portiacraft. I do advise you to get an inspection done by the best before getting your wallet. I could save you £1000s.

Regards
