Carcoon vs Airchamber

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all keeping safe and looking forward to getting your cars out again!

I appreciate it's been asked before but I cannot find any remotely recent threads - I'm considering an Airchamber vs Carcoon Veloce to help protect my car in a well ventilated and dry modern barn. It's a shared storage facility so part of the attraction is helping prevent accidental bumps etc.

Does anyone have any view on their relative merits? Thanks for any thoughts and opinions!
Regards
John

Hello John,
I keep my car in a large, dry and airy warehouse and I bought an Airchamber over seven years ago. During this time, I haven't come across any condensation or moisture within the chamber or the car itself. A year or two ago, one of the fan motors gave up the ghost, but it was easily and quickly replaced. Being able to 'drive in' and 'drive out' is a nice feature.

Hope this helps.

Arfor.

Thanks Arfor

I have to say I loved your post and the story of the 45 year ownership of your car.

I‘ve only had mine for 25 years but she’s part of the family and I couldn’t imagine parting with her either!

Take care and keep safe
John

Hi John. i've had Airchamber for a few years & it's great. I only use car in summer so it spends 6 winter months all tucked up. The 2 fans provide plenty of air flow & there is a small zip in the top of rear entrance which I leave open. 2 side opening flaps make for easy access and having a frame means the bubble does not fall on to the car when the fans are off. The paintwork and more importantly the brake discs remains dry and free from rust. I have put the car away wet when returning from a trip and with a hot engine and air flow the car will be dry in a few hours.

Hello John
interesting reading Arfor’s response as I have no knowledge of the air chamber but I did settled on a carcoon back in 2016 after a complete refurb of my 1988 3.2. I have to say I consider it one of the best purchases I have made for the car as all those worries about keeping the conditions right are now solved. As Arfor says being able to just drive in and out at will is great. The body work stays dust free and I have never had any condensation issues in the time I have had it. it also has a battery conditioner built in which is also very helpful. I do have a dehumidifier but have never had to use it as the important issue is that the carcoon ensures that the all important due point is not reached, so humidity level is not an issue. I have a humidity meter that I added inside the carcoon which is more for interest and a quest for knowledge rather than a necessity.
Another important issue is that you don’t actually want the air too dry as it can affect the leather and dry it out. Having said that just to be pedantic I do keep a passive dehumidifier pack in the foot well over the worst part of the winter rather as belt and braces.
I had one small issue with the front zip not meshing properly, I called Carcoon and they immediately sent me free is charge a few replacement zip followers as spares. Having done a bit of googling in the meantime I worked out that just tightening up the jaws on the existing zip follower with some pliers did the trick anyway so the spares are there when I need them. Since then I have kept the zip lubricated with dry lube just to ensure the best possible condition and avert any premature failure.
One other thing when ordering, for a reasonable extra fee Carcoon will make a bespoke adjustment of the Carcoon for you which I used to make sure I had enough space behind the enclosure to still get to and use a racking system and bench on that side of the garage. careful measuring is required though to make sure your precious Porsche will Still fit neatly when zipped in. I also find the side zips very useful when needing access to either side of the car etc.

Sorry this rather like war and peace but I do hope it is helpful.
best regards

Hi John

I am currently looking at these two options for my 964. Did you buy in the end and, if so, which option?
Any pointers?

Hi,

I have used an outdoor Carcoon for my car for 5 or 6 years now.
I clean the car in October and then put it inside the carcoon for 6 months.
The outdoor carcoon provides great protection from the elements and also maintains the battery really well.
I have never had a problem with mould or damp.
If it snows the weight of the snow can sometimes cause the bubble to collapse but is easily rectified by brushing snow off the roof of the carcoon.
the Airchamber looks great for an indoor environment (Garage/barn etc) and the ability to access the car is a real benefit over the carcoon system.
I have attached a picture of my carcoon taken as I post this.
It constantly provides satisfaction that the car isn't out in all weathers and was well worth the investment.

Hi all, I’m currently looking for an indoor veloce for my 944, but nobody seems to have any stock, anybody know of anywhere to try. Thanks.

Just a quick update Carcoon now have stock. I wanted to order the small which is 433cm and was told that it was to small for a 944, and would need the medium which is to big for my garage. What sizes are other people using. Thanks.
