Boxter 986 strange rattle.....

Hi All,

We have a 1999 986 2.7 which has just come out of storage. We took her for a drive this morning and there is a strange intermittent whine/rattle noise apparently from the passenger rear wheel area.

This is worse on startup and under acceleration. As it is intermittent I dont think it is a wheel bearing (although it could be...)

Has anyone else had anything like this? I am having our garage have a look just in case.

Many Thanks

Adrian,

It's impossible to diagnose this type of problem remotely, but since your car's been in storage for a while it's possible that you've just got a sticky tappet if it's a light tapping sound or possibly timing chain tensioner related. A failing wheel bearing would be more of a continuous droning sound and would be more pronounced during cornering when the bearing is loaded.

You might want to consider an oil change, but if you're confident that the oil's OK then take the car for a decent drive to get the engine and oil warmed thoroughly and see if the problem persists. If it does then it's best to get some professional advice.

IMHO, Motorhead (as usual) is dead right.
I left my 987.2 for 4 weeks with the odd short engine start and on the last start after the 4 week period it ran badly, almost a 5 cylinder, and a ticking noise...it was rough.

Took it for a good drive (not a hard drive) for about 40 miles and came back running on 6, quiet (for a Boxster on tick-over) and full of throttle response.
Been great since.
These cars do not like hibernation.
