High mileage 968 as a near daily

Hello from the 996 part of the org.

Ive had an itch for a 968 for many years and I am on the verge of taking the plunge during lockdown.

Contrary to most people’s view I am looking for a Tiptronic as I will be using the car on and off for work and play, she won’t be a garage queen and will be used to go most places subject to us all being let out at some point.

Is there any real reason why a high mileage example wouldn’t be a sensible buy bearing in mind the above use?

And what should I be concerned about?

I had a 964 convertible for 15 years and 100k miles as a daily so not much more scary than that!

thanks

As with any 968 purchase, service history is probably the most important thing to check. When were cam belt/timing belt and rollers last replaced (current knowledge says 4 years/50k miles intervals max), likewise water pump, gearbox ATF fluid and filter. I had a 968 tip coupe from Nov 1998 that was for the first few years our main car, used for everything from supermarket runs to visiting parents etc., loved that car would would have kept it if I still had my 3 car garage instead of the tight 1 car garage we've had since about 2007, only parted with it as I had to scratch the cabriolet itch so swopped it for a 968 tip cab!

How high is high mileage?
Are you looking at the one with 195,000 on near Darlington?

It's not that far from me, so if we ever get let out again I could pop over and take a look at it.

Thanks for the info both, it’s frustrating not being able to view at the moment as well as being in Dorset which at the best of times seems always so far away from any cars I’d like to buy.

I agree history is always important and still valid even with cars that haven’t be driven many miles over a number of years, it’s just assessing the risk of rigid annual serving (even if Less than 500 miles driven) vs possible problems vs cost of the car..

Now you need to register on the porsche968uk forum as it's far and away the best place for help and advice for 968 owners - of which I was one for 20 years! There's even the possibility that someone on there will recognise/know the car you're buying, it's happened before!

Welcome to the 968 club, at close to 200k check the history to see if the flex plate has been replaced, this is an eye watering job on a tip, and 30 year old rubber has a habit of falling to bits

Hi Waylander

The fly wheel damper and crank seal were replaced at 170k however that was 10 years ago.

thanks

10 years should be fine, it’s not far short of a £3000.00 job today, the part is 1800 on its own

this is the only oddity of the Tip
