An uexpected disapointment

I was recently contacted by a pal of mine who was after a particular favour. A friend on his had to abandon his car to make an urgent visit to a relative. Now I'm not too sure of the exact details but the party with the problem was in Kingston and the relative who had the other undisclosed problem was in Barnard Castle and the car, but the way was a late-ish model Boxster. Please bare with me as I realise this is in the 3.2 Carrera (my car) section and not the Boxster section but read on and you will find out why. For reasons not known to me the Boxster was deemed unsuitable for this journey but had to be returned to the owners house near to Crawley. The intermediary knew I also lived near to Crawley and of course was familiar to Porsche motor cars and subsequently was contacted to see if I could go and pick up the Boxster and return it to it's home. Everything was going to plan, I took public transport to Kingston, met with the his companies caretaker, was handed the keys and extricated the car from the company car park and got going for Crawley. I must say I was rather looking forward to the journey having never driven a Boxster before but soon into the trip I started to have quite negative feelings about the car.
If I had to sum up this car in one word it would be bland with a capital B. This was just one boring motor car. OK everything worked but nothing really felt connected. There was not a point where the clutch bit, just a connection somewhere along it's travel, the brakes worked well but the pedal felt as if it was not pushing a master cylinder more some detached system that pushed fluid to the wheels. And the steering was incredibly light although it did have some feedback but it reminded me of driving a '50's American car. Maybe I should have driven it harder which possibly might have shown it's virtues but it wasn't my car and I gave it due respect.
I used to have a 997 C4S but I found this a slightly boring car to drive, hence the move back to air cooled. This Boxster seemed a continuation of this feeling, I can honestly say I got more excitement out of an Escort Mexico than either car, maybe it's just me.
Sorry Boxster owners but not my cup of tea, and heavens sake don't anyone lend me a Taycan.

I can only assume the Boxster you drove was a bad one, I have a 2001 986 S (my second) and a Carrera 3.2 and I love them both, to me they comprise the perfect Porsche garage. Yes, the 911 is more of an event and is undoubtedly the more stimulating drive, but as a pure sports car, I reckon the 986 is unsurpassed - and that includes later Boxsters, they can't hold a candle to mine for pure driving fun - yes, they are undoubtedly better cars, but better sports cars? I think not. With the exception of the Lotus Elan, I reckon it's the best sports car ever built.
By the way, I totally get the Escort Mexico, I had one (among other wonderful fast Fords) into which I fitted a Lotus Twin Cam and if I could have any one of my old cars back, that would be the one!
Oh, and you were probably wise not to post this in the Boxster forum!

I have both a modified 3.2 (3.4 now) and a 987 S Boxster.

Both are great fun in different ways and to say the Boxster is sterile is so wrong, you need to exploit its potential.

About 5 years ago we drove the EVO triangle, Porsche's ranged form my IB to 996 and 997 Turbo's, a GT2 a few GT3's, standard 996 and 997 Carrera's a 2.7 manual Boxster and even a 458 Ferrari.

The Boxster was epic, easily kept pace with the much more powerful Porsche kin, its agility and ability to carry speed around the most challenging of twisty bits was amazing. Yes in a straight line the others would leave it behind - not by far, but where is the fun in that.

Borrow/hire a Boxster then book a track day!
