987.2 Outside Air Temperature Sensor Fault

When I took the Cayman out for a short drive in the sun this afternoon to dry out the brakes after giving it a decent wash I noticed that the outside air temperature was fluctuating between about 13.5 and 15 degC when I guess it should have been registering a solid 19 or 20 degC. Because of the temperature fluctuation I'm hoping that it's just a sensor fault rather than the OBD itself.

The sensor is the pencil-like object mounted on the duct face behind the offside grille and I presume that it just pushes in from the rear, although when I tried pulling it back it refused to budge. Am I doing something wrong or is just brute force required? Maybe the application of some WD40 would help?

Any advice would be appreciated. All academic of course since I can't drive anywhere and I'm unlikely to be able to get a replacement part ATM.
