I wondered who I might contact to discuss upgrading the 991 manual gear change. My car is a 991.2 with the 7 speed manual box. I'm very please with car but the gear change lacks a bit of precision annoyingly at the wrong moment!
I found a couple of possible upgrades and would like to hear from anyone who might have tried them. The first uses the shorter and differently sprung gear stick assembly from the 6 speed Cayman GT4 box. The second from a US company Numeric Racing. I understand both have been tried here and in the US but neither are approved by Porsche. The Numeric Short Throw Shifter looks to be beautifully made and they do guarantee it to work with the 7 speed box but it is pretty expensive.
 
Hi, It took me a while to get used to the 7 speed. I initially found the down-changes tricky - was particularly worried about changing from 7th to 3rd accidentally. I've now got the hang of it. I needed to be much more precise about the direction I push the stick with my palm around the 6th/7th positions to stop it dropping to the wrong gear by accident. I tend to avoid dropping from 7th to 5th. It works a treat now. Am very pleased with it. I used to have the 6 speed and that was certainly easier, but once you gt the hang of the 7 speed it is excellent. I like the closer ratios - especially with the 3.0 turbo given the tremendous torque. It really pulls.

What do you think of the 991.2engine. I think it's superb.
 
I am aware the manual change action on my T is noticeably more precise than
the usual 991.2 gearshift I have used.
Which parts are different I don’t know

The numeric racing stuff is great quality, we've fit alot of the CAE / Coolerworx shifters on other marques but never one of theirs however have seen the product and looks a good quality.

Alot of marques offer solid bushes (alloy inserts) to replace the stock plastic/rubber bushes found in the shifter and cable assembly. This can often make a huge difference but unsure whether anyone offers anything for your car. The numeric Racing Kit would be the ultimate solution to your problem but will come with "ultimate" prices i would imagine!

Spackers, I agree the engine is fantastic and like you I'm getting use to the change now but do still think it could be more precise.
Following on from Chris Chorley's comment I'm trying to get the part number for the 911 T shift.
I have asked Porsche Brooklands for a price of the GT4 shift Part No. 981.424.010.20 which is £163.00 less 10% Club discount plus VAT.
They also forwarded a list of associated models but this didn't include the 911 T. The listed models are 2014 991R/GT3/RS/GT-Speed, 2016 981 & 2019 982 Boxster Spyder and 2016 Cayman GT4.1 & 2019 GT4.2. I can't however find the 991 T part number but I do wonder if maybe it is the same although as I understand it all the cars they listed have 6 speed boxes and of course the 992.2 has 7.
The Numeric is available from Design911 at £513.00 less 5% plus VAT. And it is guaranteed to work with the 7 speed box.

Swapping the shift unit looks to be pretty simple, at least those I've seen on YouTube make it look so!

When I ordered my 991.2 4S I wished that I had chosen to include the carbon manual gear stick as part of the build, I thought this would be easy to replace at a later time. However after receiving the car I inquired the price to get my local dealer to replace the existing gear-stick to fit the carbon version, the cost for the part and fitting was astronomical, I recall it was nearly £2,000! I thought it would be a simple 15 min job to do! However having a shorter gear-stick for about £600 does sound enticing.
 
The brochure Porsche had available when the T was launched quoted the gear change as short shift. This may of course just mean a shorter stick, Although the conversation I had with Lichfield seemed to suggest the bushing was changed, although this might just be a mod they carried out. The numeric sounds good value, hope the fit goes well
 
...interesting... I love the shift, but I've nothing to compare it with! Coming down from 7th is a bit weird - the trick is a little pause to allow the lock-out to close before grabbing 6th... anyone have experience of the "ultimate" (eg., Cayman) 6-speed to compare?
 
My instructor at PEC was really helpful with the best technique as I found the strong spring bias difficult initially. Also I never use 7 th. unless on a motorway the gearing is just to high and treat it rather like
the overdrive gearing on the TR6 ..........rather a long time ago!
 
lol! yes ... I'm many ways, you really don't need anything other 2nd and 3rd in the UK!

...but on a long motorway drive 7th is very realxed, and I find it amazing how the T quietens down from its normal 'raw' character. I don't think its intended for anything else?
 
I'm very pleased to report that the Numeric NM400 Short Throw Shift is superb. Changes are just so much more precise and I now know exactly which gear I'm in and where I'm shifting to! It is somewhat clunky but somehow just perfect in a sports car! Design911 hold stock and I fitted it in 2 hours. I must admit to some trepidation removing so many trim items around the center console etc. but really it was all pretty easy. Numeric have a good "how to install" video on their site, www.numericracing.com. Mind you this seems to indicate the various trim items just pop off, they don't and do need a lot of care to ensure the various locating pegs and clips are not damaged. But all in all it is an upgrade I'm very happy to recommend. Out of interest following various discussions I did find out that the Carrera T does have the Cayman GT4 gear shift lever. Although Porsche seem reluctant to offer this as an upgrade, seemingly saying this part is not designed for a 7 speed box, this is of course what the Carrera T has.

The comment regarding the T gear lever is interesting in so much that Porsche who are quite secretive about
component interchange told me at Goodwood in 2018 that the 6 speed box was considered but policy reserved it for GT models. Maybe the gear stick was all that was allowed!
 
Pleased to read it all went well for you Chris, I presume it would invalidate the renewal of the Porsche warranty as it will be flagged up on the 111 point check being none Porsche modification?
 
My thought re the warranty is that if really necessary I could perhaps reinstall the original Porsche shift.

I'm thinking of doing this upgrade to a 992 C2S, same gearbox, same comments as you had.
Are you still happy with it?, did Porsche notice it on the 111 warranty check?, Are you anywhere near London?
I'm also looking at Techart or K&W height adjustable spring kit or maybe 992 C2S SPASM springs...

I'm very please with the Numeric short throw shifter. It's a great improvement, very precise and feels like a gear shift should.
My car was with Porsche for its 4 year service in July and no mention was made of the upgrade other than "your gear shift feels great". So I guess they noticed but didn't delve into what I had done. I'd certainly recommend it. I'm in Great Missenden, Bucks so if that's convenient do let me know.
