Which Battery Charger?

Hi Guys

Im looking to buy a battery charger but im a little confused with the varying opinions.

There seems to be varying models of C-Tek to choose from (3.8 / 5.0 ) or an official Porsche badged one.

Which one do I purchase?

Cheers

Hi Bryan,

There are a few posts on here, (both in 991 and 992 forums), that mention if you have a lithium battery the answer is a bit more complicated. If you have rear wheel steer on your car then you will likely have a lithium battery. If not, I happen to have a Porsche (CTEK) charger for sale I used on my 991.2 GTS, (without RWS). I think I also read somewhere that CTEK themselves recommend the Porsche charger v their unbranded versions because the algorithm is different? It's a complex answer (sorry), so I am currenrly waiting for Porsche Swindon to re-open and advise me on the new type of charger I need for my 992, (with RWS).

Hi Bryan
The C-Tek MXS5.0 is the go to unit that is most popular as it is suitable for most battery types including AGM which I think is in your car. My 992 has a lithium battery and there is a different model for that.

I have the C-Tek MXS5.0 which I use on my 991.1 Turbo S which has rear wheel steering but not a lithium battery.

I also use the C-Tek on a Jeep Grand Cherokee and an MX 5 with really good results, top up charging during periods when I am away plus reconditioning. When I bought mine it was considerably cheaper that the Porsche branded model.

AGM is the acronym for Absorbed Glass Mat and was introduced for the heavier use requirement of stop/start as I recall.

You can tell the battery type by looking at the model number which I think is LiFePO4. I connect the crocodile clips to the battery positive and the ground post.

I don't know whether the RWS means the car has the lithium battery, I suspect not as I had RWS on my GT3 and 991.2 C2S both of which had AGM batteries.

So thats clear then :)
With the car still under warranty, i just want to make the right call.

Are we saying a 5.0 is the way to go?

I guess the first port of call would be to see what type of battery is have as this seems to determine the type of charger? Is that correct?

My handbook states that my battery is AGM and the C-Tek is fine. Only marking I can find on the battery apart from the scanning thing is VRLA, no idea what it means.

The Lithium battery has LiFePO4 (sic) in blue written on it, so it's easy to spot.

There is much debate on Rennlist about who has what battery. My handbook lists both as it seems to be dependant on what options you have. The only way to be 100% sure is to pop the boot, remove the plastic cover, and see the battery. I would add a photo, but for whatever reason I can't add one....

The photo needs to be in pdf, jpg, gif, png, or jpeg format and with a maximum file size of 3500 kB - it won't upload if bigger, so you will need either to reduce the file size or alternatively upload it to a web photo hosting site, such as Imugr, and paste a link to it in your forum post.

Try using the "reply" button on the blue ribbon NOT the Quick Reply section at the bottom. The menu should then appear. [;)]

Yep did that too.. Noted you can only add a "forum" photo in advanced mode. When I open the menu to open from gallery/upload it just hangs.

You need to click on select and it should then take you to your File Explorer to select the file you need.
If it hangs at this stage, it's possibly a permission selection on your system rather than a forum problem, since I've been able to upload this screenshot successfully.

Clive
