What’s the best tyre to fit?

Once everything is back to some normality I will be looking to buy a new set of tyres for my 996 Targa.

I am torn between Pirelli or Michelin. There is not much of a price difference between the two brands and the only difference being that the Pirelli tyre are N4 and the Michelin tyre are an N3. (Not sure what this means but would like to fit the correct ones to my car)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you

Kind regards

Andy

Michelin PS2s get my vote for my 02 Targa. I've tried Contis & Pirelli in my 9 yrs of ownership, Contis were OE I believe on my car.
I believe some have put non N rated PS4s on front but they don't make them in the absolutely correct size for the rear 18s in a 285.

Thanks for your reply. It’s good to hear that the Michelins are a good tyre fitted to your Targa. I think I will now also go for the Michelin PS2

Thanks again

Kind regards

I've had Pirellis on mine and there OK, but I think they are a bit less sure footed than Michelins IMHO and so they will be the next choice.
Enjoy & kind regards

I had Pirellis on one GT3 and Michelins on another GT3 the Pirellis wear much quicker than Michelins I also had Continental on 996 4s they seemed pretty good on the 4s more of a comfort tyre fair wear rate.
But tyres are a personal choice, price grip wear all comes into play I would always try to stick to N Rated where possible.

Thank you for reply. It is appreciated.
I also had Continentals on a BMW I once owned, as you said they are a comfortable ride.
yes, I will definitely stick with the N rated tyre.
Thanks again

Thanks, these will be the ones that I will have fitted. (As soon as everything goes back to some normality)
kind regards

Hi, My 996.2 C2 Coupe was fitted with Pirelli’s and when I had to replace the fronts due to a cut I decided to stay with Pirelli and I haven’t regretted it at all. It was 2 years and several track days since I’d previously had Hunter laser 4 wheel alignment done but following an alignment check carried at a Pirelli Performance Centre in York where R7 had been given a very informative talk, they reported a small degree of misalignment which I asked them to correct. The handling had felt good before but after they’d carried out the alignment I could immediately notice a significant improvement. The point I’m making is that irrespective of which tyres are fitted, perfect alignment is the key to sure footedness.

I have Michelin PS2 N3 on my 987.1 Boxster S and I’m perfectly happy with those too.

The consensus of opinion seems to favour Michelin’s but it has to be a personal choice governed to some extent by availability for wheel sizes.
