using a solar top up charger ?

there are several threads about using battery conditioners to maintain battery charge
my problem is doing this with the vehicle parked on the street

you can get cheap solar panels to stick into the lighter socket but i have been advised
that i need something more sophisticated to avoid car or battery damage

can anyone who has a working solution please advise on best kit and setup
