MOSCOW TO NEW YORK - BY ROAD ANYONE?

O.k. playmates.

Riders on the storm?

Maybe not?

Oh well.

When / if things ever dry out and the old current bun makes a reappearance then what we have here is a little adventure that will live long in the memory and involve more driving than eating.
If you fancy hearing your balalaika ringing out or just want to keep your comrade (Porsche) warm then watch this space.

Like a dog without a bone.

Zeuski.

P.s. The glorious Lincs La Sarthe is provisionally set for Saturday 5th June 15:00 hrs start (weather permitting of course).

Playmates.

Just in case anyone was wondering about this one ........ Moscow is near Bradford ........ but apparently it seems there is another one in Russia and New York is of course in Lincolnshire :ROFLMAO:. No fixed date for this trip yet but there are various options as to where we could go and what we could do after we arrive at our destination - it is very close to RAF Conningsby home of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and also the superb air museum at East Kirkby (restored WW2 Lancaster and Mosquito etc). There are lots of places to eat afterwards so we can take our pick but will need to book in advance.

The plan is to meet up near to Moscow at 09:00 hrs for a quick bacon sarnie and a cuppa and then to shoot off ASAP at a brisk pace before 10:00 hrs. Total driving time is about 4 hours covering approx 130 miles - and yes there will be a wee wee stop somewhere along the way. The route takes in dramatic Pennine moorland hills and glorious rolling Lincolnshire wolds. The roads are all hand picked A's and B's with only a very short on / off hop along the motorway.

The proposed route is as follows :-

MOSCOW - OXENHOPE - HEBDEN BRIDGE - MYTHOLMROYD - RIPPONDEN - MOSELDEN HEGHT - DENSHAW - DELPH - MARSDEN - MELTHAM - HOLMFIRTH - HADE EDGE - LANGSETT - STOCKSBRIDGE - TANKERSLEY - BRAMPTON - GOLDTHORPE - MARR - ROSSINGTON - BAWTRY - GRINGLEY ON THE HILL - GAINSBOROUGH - HEMSWELL CLIFFE - MARKET RASEN - WRAGBY - HORNCASTLE - NEW YORK.

Some of you will know parts of this route but I doubt anyone will have driven the whole trip ........ and anyway great roads are made to be driven (repeatedly in a Porsche)!

The museum at East Kirkby is closed on Sundays so if we planned to visit there our trip would need to be on a Saturday. There is also a 40's event planned this summer so maybe we could include this event as another alternative?

Any interest / comments/ suggestions - please post.

Thanks & regards.

Zeusy.

..... over the hill and around the bend .....

Martyn,

Your posts really are mad as fxxk [:D]

I worked out that you probably meant New York in Lincs, that's a long straight road. But I couldn't work out where Moscow was, I didn't think you meant Kilmarnock. Didn't know there was Moscow near Bradford, Google maps didn't show that one.

Lincs La Sarther sounds interesting, had to google that too. Not sure I have a car with headlamps worth toffee!

Hi Mark.

Seek and ye shall find.

Thanks for breaking the ice …….. I was beginning to think there was no one else out there.

Moscow in West Yorkshire really does exist ……. I have been and seen the sign there that says so…….. and er ……..no its not on Google maps.

New York is indeed in deepest Lincolnshire ……… and er yes there is a sign that says its there …..... and yes I have been there too.

The Lincs la Sarthe run was originally planned for last summer but was sadly aborted due to flooding. The plan is to try again this year and to have the run coincide with a full (well …. almost full) moon ……….so that we can howl all night long (well er …... for a good bit of it anyway).

There is a bloke who has a stall at Huddersfield Autojumble who sells 100 x brighter genuine Ring headlamp bulbs for £10 a pair. I got a set for the 996 and erm …… they're …….brilliant. Let me know what type yours are and I will see if he has a set for you.

Regards.

Zeusy.

P.s. There is …...erm ……. one other thing you should know …………….. it's the voices that make me do it.

Sounds very interesting, and I would definitely be up for this run. As my mother lives just outside New York I know the route (or various routes) very well. East Kirkby Aviation Museum is about 15 minutes away, which again I know well as we used to own the garage to the right of the entrance!

There is an interesting restaurant down the road from New York which is American themed owned by a crazy guy called Bob Wilding. It has a large car park and could be a good end to a themed run. I am over that way this weekend, so I will pop in to ask if they would be interested in accommodating us.

What dates are you thinking of?

Steve J.

Hi Steve.

Cool.

The venue you mention just has to be the highly regarded but utterly bonkers altar of western decadence …….. The V-ate. [8D]

What a great idea.

Start the day off with a meagre portion of raw basic soviet style proletarian subsistence frugality amidst the harsh barren desolation of glowering West Yorkshire - end it wallowing in the Eden-like verdant lush greenery of South Lincolnshire sampling the American dream and gorging ourselves silly.

Can this really be PCGB R7?

Dat...... da da da...... dada dah ……. livin in the USA.

Bring it on.

I was thinking we could maybe meet up at Asa Nicholsons Bakery - I haven't been there for a good while but the food used to be excellent [:)]and they have a decent size car park plus its only 5 minutes from Moscow.

I will have a run up there and see what they could do for us numbers wise.

Steve if you want to check out the V-ate sometime or wherever you think would be most suitable for us to eat we could maybe pick a date and work out who wants to come?

....... there's wheat in the field
and water in the stream
and salt in the mine
and an aching in me
I can no longer stand and wonder
cos' I'm driven by this hunger .......

The bubble car museum is also quite near, we used it for a lunch stop once on a WOTY.

Thanks Mark, I thought of that last night as well!

I will pop into both this weekend and ask the question!

At East Kirkby museum there are scheduled taxi runs for the Lancaster on Saturday 2nd May and the Mosquito on Saturday 9th May - so either of these dates would bring added interest - seeing and hearing those Merlins fire up is an experience you will not easily forget.

....... and I dreamed I saw the bombers riding shotgun in the sky turning into butterflies above our nation ........

Popped in to V-Ate on Saturday, they are happy to have us, we just need a date to book well in advance! They can seat 60, so it should be enough for us. I will keep in touch with them.

I also went to the bubblecar museum, but it was closed on Saturday afternoon! I think this may not be so viable as it has limited parking unless we can use the caravan site field. Rather rutted bumpy entrance as well!

Steve.

Good work Steve.

On Saturday I checked out the bakery café near Moscow and the breakfast I had was fine - making a booking is no problem but around 30 people is just about the max they can cope with at a single sitting.

Afterwards I drove the first half of the route and in lousy wet weather it took me 2 hours which is ok.

Today I have contacted the air museum and asked if we could visit as a group on either May 2nd (Lancaster) or May 9th (Mosquito) and I am now waiting to hear back from them.

I will be at the brekky meet this Sunday so if you are around then maybe we can have a natter?

Just so that everyone is aware please note both of the above dates are on a SATURDAY as the air museum is not open on a Sunday.

The sooner we can get numbers confirmed the sooner we can get this thing off the ground.

…….. 8 miles high and when you touch down ……… you'll find signs in the street that say where you're going ……...

Where did you get to as half way? I live in Rossington and as I mentioned, I drive this route regularly. From here to East Kirkby is easily achievable in 2 hours, and this would allow for a break stop if required. If we needed to fit in a toilet break, Willingham Woods is on route and would allow enough parking (and an ice cream if the weather is good!).

Yes, I am also going to the Sheffield breakfast meet on Sunday, so we can have a chat there.
