Cayenne S E-Hybrid - Home Charger ?

Hello,

I have recently purchased a 2016 Cayenne S e-Hybrid.

I am currently charging overnight using the Porsche Charging Unit that came with the car (plugged into a standard external UK 3 pin socket).

The current unti is a 16amp 3.6KW charger - but the cable isn't quite long enough.

I can get a longer Type 2 charging cable that would plug into the Charging Unit - OR I could buy a non OEM Porsche unit that comes with a longer cable OR I could have a home charger installed.

How do others charge their e-Hybrids ?

Thanks,
Rob.

Personally I would get a EVSE installed .. most "granny chargers" aka the 13A plug in ones run at just under the 13A as a UK plug will overheat if ran at 13A continually

I have a 7.2kw / 32A home charging unit on its own fused / separate RCD protected feed. (BP Chargemaster supplied and fitted)

I use a 7.5m blue type 2 cable (have used it to charge Tesla, Porsche and Range Rover cars) that i keep in the car and another I have plugged in permanently to the charging unit (like a "tethered cable unit". All work fine.

You could just get a longer type 2 cable if you have a 3.6kw charge outlet already.

Note the home charging units should have their own separate circuit with own higher resistant RCD fitted and not use the standard home RCD circuit shared with other sockets.

JLR cars , Nissan Leaf and Smart cars will ALL blow the RCD on home fuse board if not on separate RCD protected circuit. Porsche's seem to be OK. I think there were new regulations in 2018 to ensure home charging units were updated to have own separate RCD protection.

Hi
A fairly newbie 2017 Cayenne S e-hybrid user still under warranty. I notice this thread has been quiet for a couple of years but I am trying to source a longer Type 2 cable to use with the mobile charging unit. By that I mean avoiding the £500+ cost from OPC.

The market is awash with 3rd party Chinese complete charging units that are supposed to work ok, at half the cost, but it is a path I am a bit nervous of going down. I thought there may have been a few longer (5m or 7.5m) cables out there on the used market but nothing. I found one 2.5m on eBay which is only what I already have, and even that was £200+. I believe that the cables are common to the VAG family and are made by Harting, but their website does not offer them for sale.

Have any other members been able to source a longer cable for this model (I believe the part number is 7PP971676P)?

Thanks

Kev

Grateful gd. I did find them earlier so good to know they are reliable. Issue is they do not appear to sell the charger to Type 2 cable in any length. I will call them tomorrow all the same.

Hi, we have a 2020 E Hybrid and to solve the short charging cable issue, I run a heavy duty extension lead from the 3 pin socket at the back of my garage to just inside the garage door. I then plug the Porsche charging unit into that and feed the cable under the door to the car that is parked just outside of the door. all of the Porsche charging unit is inside the garage as the car is just 6 to 10 feet outside of the garage.

we have been doing that for the last 12 months or so with no issues. I just set the car to finish charging when my cheap electricity rate ends in the early hours

I believe the 3 pin socket only gives out about 2 kw per hour and none of the cables or sockets get hot or show any sign of distress. I know it’s not ideal but when I mentioned this to the sales manager at the OPC, he said it was not recommended but that a lot of customers did this.

a friend has regularly left his model 3 charging like this at various rental properties and family homes with no issues for days on end

Grateful for the replies. I have now sourced a 3rd party supplier for a separate charging unit with a 10m lead and they have impeccable feedback and reviews over a 4 year period. I will see how we get on and update this thread accordingly. At £200 the whole unit is only 40% the cost of a replacement vehicle end lead only from OPC so worth a try as it conforms to CE standards.

On a parallel option I note the advice about not using extension leads, but when I pushed two separate OPCs on this matter they were not very convincing. We kind of agreed it was all to do with the fear of overheating and weatherproofing of the lead housing. I agree with @gtipirelfi that this should not be an issue in a quality extension and there are a few of those out there.
