Sad Day

Well after 22 years and over 150,000 miles with us our S2 is no more [:(]

Sunday night she caught fire in the engine bay and now has a very burnt front end, it's taken me 5 days to be able to post about it. ClassicLine have take her away to a salvage yard for inspection, but what I could see of the remains on the roadside in the dark, I doubt very much they will be putting her back on the road for me. Totally gutted here, after so many years and so much hard work keeping her in tiptop condition whilst getting regular use, all to no avail in the end.

If anyone needs a good engine (albeit very black on the outside just now) she was only rebuilt by EMC 6000 miles ago in 2018, I'll find out which yard she is in.

Paul,

as soon as this came up on my phone had to reply, so sorry to read this totally gutted for you both - devastating and can’t imagine the pain

Really sad for you Paul-Can just hope damage not as bad as you first thought-and Classic line are pretty

good

Best wishes

Ron

Main thing is you & anyone else are OK-very sad news though-even my humble 924S has become a member of the family although it cost virtually nothing at the start .Was it fuel or electrics or don't you know yet?

so sorry to hear this Paul, as one of the 'old-timers' I know how much the car meant to you...hope there's a happy ending somewhere down the road, be it with yours not being as bad as first thought or if you find another good example to continue in 944 ownership.

Good luck sir...

Pete

Hiya Paul ,

Very sorry to hear your sad news after so many years of ownership ,,,

Hope there’s a happier ending,,,

All the best,,, jasonp

That is just so sad, after 22 years and yes it is just a car but the emotional attachment of all that time and effort,

I for one would be heartbroken even after 6.5 years of ownership,

are you planning on replacing it ?

and do you have any idea what caused it?

we had a family A35 that my dad had owned since 1959 and some twat crashed into it when it was parked and wrote it off in 1998, the whole family went into mourning

Thanks guys, group hug anyone

Don't know the exact cause but I'm pretty sure it was a fuel leak. I was out for a quick run after the weekly wash and wax when she started to run a bit wierd, like a misfire but not a misfire. Was on a country road so pulled over and popped the bonnet to take a quick look but instantly smelt fuel and got sprayed with a fine mist. Slammed the bonnet and started running, but I could see flames starting already. Within minutes the front end was an inferno [:(]. The fire brigade got there about 10 minutes later and put it out after a few minutes, but spent a further 20 mins or so damping it down until the temperature dropped. There's nothing left under the bonnet except the lump of the engine itself, the bonnet and wings are all buckled and bent and the bumper is just not there anymore. One by one the tyres exploded and almost comically the popups started going up and down by themselves at one point, almost as if she was flashing for help.

The insurance company asked for all the documentation, service history, keys, photos yesterday and say they have all they need to look at the case. Just a matter of waiting now

Oh no, that’s awful! So sorry to read this Paul. I haven’t posted on here for a while but had to come out of lurking on reading this. Huge sympathy - I lost a 996 to an engine fire a few years ago, only the swift arrival of the fire brigade saved my 944 that was parked just a few feet behind it. Hoping for a swift and satisfactory insurance settlement if the car cannot be saved

much the same as as steve , not been on here for a while , and just read this....... very sorry to read this Paul 😩😔 hope you can sort it or another mate

Just one of the reasons I carry a good fire extinguisher in a quick release bracket just behind the passenger seat.Never been needed on my own cars but once saved a taxi with an engine fire in Stourbridge whilst the driver blissfully unaware continued reading the evening paper!!

So sorry to hear this Paul...glad you were unhurt, and I hope you get a proper settlement that will get you back into a Porsche.

A cautiomnary tale for all of us, perhaps?

Sad news indeed but at least you were unhurt and safely out of the way.

If Classicline will let you keep the salvage then all may not be lost?

RH let you keep the salvage, one of the reasons I've stayed with them for years. By the sounds of it though Divers car is toast.

Oh sh1t! Gutted for you, was such a well loved example - will be very difficult to replace, I hope the insurance company looks after you [:(][:(][:(]

Very sad to hear that... I know how attached I am to Bomber after just 12.5 years... and yours was a beautiful example. Hope you get an outcome that works for you.

Really sorry to hear this.

Fingers crossed you get some money back and/or something positive comes out this eventually. I suggest getting another one, or perhaps a 968.

Either way, good luck.
