charging question

Hello all,

I'm just about to collect a macan and am wondering about winter battery maintenance. (My back is saying 'no more' to longer trips in my old defender 90 hence the change).
Reading the macan manual, it shows clip-on charging leads at the battery compartment terminals - but on my 991 I use a CTEK through the passenger footwell 12v socket which works great.
So my question for the combined wisdom of the forum is .... can I do the same on 12V footwell socket on a macan (2017 MY) to trickle charge or do I have to use the battery terminals under the bonnet?

and any other macan-specific winter use tips welcome

thanks

richard

I was wrong on both counts. p104 says:
[*]The 12-volt plug sockets and the connected electrical accessories work even if the ignition is switched off or the vehicle key is removed. If the engine is not running and the accessories are switched on, the vehicle battery will be discharged. The power supply is interrupted after about 30 minutes to protect the vehicle battery. If the consumer is to be switched on again, the ignition must be switched on once.[/LIST]I'm guessing you can charge the car using the lighter socket but only for 30 mins

thanks richard,

have checked the manual and it shows charging on the battery terminals. But on the 991 (and boxster) the passenger footwell 12v socket comes on when ignition switch activated. Then I connect CTEK to the 12v socket, turn ignition off, and charger stays active and works perfectly from then (for days/weeks no problem).
I understand it won't work that way if you just plug the charger in without ignition active at the start - but once connected it seems to stay active and work fine. Absolutely no info on this in the manual - but works well this way.
So question is, does the Macan work the same way or not? electronics undoubtedly different from my other cars so wondering about it?

(it'll be driveway parked so I don't want bonnet open or cables around bonnet seal allowing water ingress if I can avoid it)

regards

richard

Ah, that sounds just the same as the 991 then. Good.
The bit they don't say is that once a charger is in the socket it doesn't turn itself off after 30 mins (on the 991 anyway)
I will give it a whirl with the macan when I pick it up next week and report back.

thanks again

richard

The real question is, do you need one ? I have left my Macan for over a month sitting on my drive, flew home, got in it and started on first turn of the key !
Are you going to be leaving it sitting there for months on end ? If not then I would suggest you never need to trickle charge it and it will be fine.

Fair question - at present I don't know - but with two of us and three cars, it's inevitable one sits around at one time or another. I figure I get about 3 and a bit weeks out of the others before charge start getting low, so keep those on charge if staying that way for a prolonged time. Likely the macan will get used regularly though. It doesn't really save me anything by not keeping it on charge, as I've already got charger etc,
