Tyres: 944s

Hi

I'm just seeking some tyre clarification I have A 1986 944s with 15" teledials

I am in no way a tyre/wheel afficianado.
  • Whatt tyre size came as stock (Brand, Size, model), actually came with the car when new?
  • What alternative size are now deemed more suitable, if any?
  • What tyres are people's preference in the UK for a road going vehicle.
  • Anypreferred retailers?
There's a plethora of posts but all mentioning various sizes that just don't seem to be consistent. I need all 4 replacingCurrently the car has

Pirelli 215/60x15
Dunlop 215/60x15

I suspect these are not the originally correct size?

I've checked the forum post detailing the 944 wheel/tyre variants, but it doesn't have a 944s listed.

Hi,
215/60/15 was an original 80's tyre size, but it's not very common for 2019!

Continental do list a Premium contact tyre in this size, which you could go for if you want to keep exactly the same, or

An alternative would be 205/65/15 of which there is a bigger range available in all 3 sectors (Budget / mid range & Premium)
This size is only 1% more in diameter (648mm v 639mm) so will not be noticeable as at 60mph you'll actually be doing 60.8mph!
Don't worry about the size 205 being 10 number less as this is NOT the actual tread width but a nominal figure and your 944 will ride, handle and
brake with this tyre size very well.

What's your budget for a new set?

Thanks.

I don't have a budget in mind, If the virtues of going all in would be a marked contrast to a mid range tyre.

Then I'm happy to listen to recommendations.

Chinese budget's are about £50 each, Mid range (Avon) £75 and Premium (Goodyear / Michelin etc) from £85
The differences can be the cheaper ones don't last as long, take longer to brake in the wet and can be noisy..

Hi, I’ve used Kumho on my 944 2.7 which has 195’s and 205’s both on 15” wheels. They were reasonably priced from Blackcircles and I’ve been pretty happy with how they drive (dry miles only, so couldn’t say about wet grip / handling). Let us know how what you end up fitting and how you get on.

I'm probably going to go with the recommendation made above and see how they play out.
