Recurring warning light PSM Disabled

I am getting intermittent warning lights related to PSM faults showing on my 2013 Boxter 981 thats only done 28,000 miles. Today I got

1) Engine fault, okay to drive
2) PSM disabled, drive carefully
3) Stop/Start disabled

The faults tend to clear on restarting the car and I have had the faults cleared at an Indie. They have also changed the brake pedal bushes. But then, just when you think its all ok, the warning lights come back. Anyone else seen this or have any ideas?

We had the same issue on our 2013 981 and it was the brake pedal bushes which is a known fault for that model year but as you appear to have had these replaced not sure what to suggest unless the replacement is also a faulty part?

I’ve had this happen for two reasons. One was the brake pedal, as you say, and the other was a coil pack failure. The system detects a misfire and then what you describe follows. on the first occasion, I hadn’t noticed the misfire. I’ve had two coil packs changed. But that event should have shown up in the diagnostics.

I too had the same fault messages when I was driving the car in early winter, cold day, top down, heater full blast to the footwells and it was the brake pedal bushes expanding preventing the brake pedal to come off its micro-switch that was causing the problem. The engine ECU throws a wobbler as it thinks you are pressing the accelerator whilst the brakes are also being applied.

I had the bushes changed foc by Porsche (car was under the approved used 2 year warranty) and not had the problem since.

If its not your coil packs causing the same indications as suggested (and as suggested that would come up on a diagnostic check) then perhaps as your bushes were changed by an Indie, have they used Porsche OE parts and if not perhaps the pedal bush problem hasn't been fully eradicated.

Why not Email Steve Winter at Jaz Porsche our Boxster Technical advisor to see if he has more ideas of what it might be.

Good luck Cliff.

Thanks folks. The latest diagnostic at my favourite Indy showed some misfires and I have now had some coil packs replaced. Fingers crossed that will be the end of it but watch this space..

Good evening ElMartillo,

Thank you for your post. I have a 2013 911 Carrera, 991 model. On a drive today I had exactly the same 2 warning lights - PSM disabled and stop/start disabled. After stopping the car and re-starting there were no warning lights for the rest of the journey. What what the end result of your issue? Did the new coil packs cure the problem? Thanks for your help. Peter Thomas.

Interesting, I have a 981 Cayman & had this happen today. Car has not moved for 3 weeks, so decided it needed a run out.

Slow speed the PDK was really jerky, slipping & juddering with the idle all over the place when stationary.

Decided to go for a longer drive to see if it just needed to good run at high temperatures. When moving all seemed fine, no sign of rough engine & was fine through the rev range. About 15 mins later I got the engine management message appear, pulled into a car park & turned the engine off & on again. If I did not blip the throttle, the car would stall. Driving home the slow speed judder remained & eventually joined by the PSM message as I pulled onto my drive.

Hoping my indie can see me tomorrow to grab the codes, and hoping this is the answer. Good tip on the brake pedal too!
