991 Register Trip to the Classic Le Mans - 4th & 5th July 2020

The 991 Register in conjunction with the 992 Register and Region 5 are excited to announce that we have made arrangements via PCGB suppliers, Lycian Events for a group trip to the iconic Le Mans 24 Hour Classic event which is taking place on the 4th and 5th July 2020.

The Classic at Le Mans is held every two years and 2020 will be the 10th Le Mans Classic to date. It is one of the greatest historic motor racing events where you will see cars that took part in the race between 1923 and 1979. In total, it is expected there will be more than 350 participants taking part. The cars will be divided into six grids, each representing a different era. They will follow each other on the track, hour after hour, for 24 hours. The start of the race will take the form of a traditional Le Mans start. In keeping with tradition, the start will be on Saturday at 16:00 with the finish 24 hours later. In addition to an exhibition of an array of wonderful cars, this international historic car meeting will also feature a parade of European Clubs on the long circuit and an auction of collectors' cars and automobilia.

We will be staying at Lycian Events secure camp site which is known as the Village on the Curves. The site includes excellent security together with a regular shuttle bus service to the paddock entrance of the circuit and to the tram stop, which provides regular services to Le Mans City centre. The Village is located on the inside of the iconic Porsche Curves and opens on the Wednesday before the event with the restaurant and bar available. There are designated 35 square metre pitches for single vehicles with up to 4 guests ensuring that you have your own, albeit small private space. The site also includes toilets, showers and for those of you that require it, there is even a pamper tent complete with hair dryers and mirrors! The reception marquee boasts three 50" HD TVs and bar area with bistro-catering providing meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner if required. Lycian Events can provide the following:

• Return ferry crossings
• General Admission tickets
• Superb trackside viewing on the iconic Porsche Curves
• Secure fenced site with 24hr English speaking security
• Lycian representatives available throughout the weekend
• Large pitches for tents, motorhomes and caravans
• Marquee with wide screen televisions to cover 24hr race
• Dining at Café Virage
• Exclusive use of Village by participants and guests
• Cash bar with draught beers
• Private serviced toilets and hot shower facilities
• Free shuttle bus operating to different parts of the circuit

The Confirmed 2020 Classic prices which follow include a PCGB discount of £25 per pitch – the price is based on two people per pitch with a standard car.

Race Tickets & Camping:
£355 per person (includes General Entrance & Paddock Tickets)

Proposed Itinerary / Crossings:
You will be free to make your own arrangements and plans for the weekend, there will be no fixed itinerary. Crossings can be arranged to suit your personal requirements however, by way of an example, a number of us are planning to travel via the Portsmouth/Cherbourg fast ferry route outbound on Thursday 2nd July @ 09:00 returning Monday the 6th July @ 17:00 the additional cost for this will be £350 per car.

There are however many other travel options including the overnight ferry to Caen, as well as Dover to Calais or Folkestone to Calais. Lycian Evens will be pleased to provide you with a quote for the crossing of your choice.

Accommodation Supplement Options:
There are a number of different camping options as well as the opportunity to take or hire a Motor Home / Caravan on site from Lycian. The camping options are:

Two Person pre-erected tent £165
Four Person pre-erected tent £225
Village Belle Glamping option £550

You can of course take your own tent for no extra cost, however, please check with Lycian that your tent will fit on the pitch.

Grandstands Supplements:
Sommer £59
Lagache £59
Leonard £59
Tavano £59
ACO £39

If you would like to join us for this fabulous informal weekend, we would recommend that you book your crossings with Joy or Saskia at Lycian Events as soon as possible, given that the availability is limited and although Brittany Ferries have only just released the prices we understand that they are selling out fast. All Lycian Events need at this stage is a £100 per person deposit. You need to tell Joy or Saskia that you are part of Martin Davis’s Region 5 / 991 - 992 register group and you will benefit from the small Porsche Club discount and we will all be grouped together on site.

Re: 991 Register Trip to the Classic Le Mans - 4th & 5th July 2020 2020/04/08 11:34:16 (permalink)
Good morning all,
I hope that you are all managing to keep safe and well during these difficult times.
I am sorry to be the bearer of disappointing news, but I have just received the following announcement from Stephen Fowell of Lycian Events.

We have just received the information below, we will be sending out an email over the next 24 hours giving clients the options for 2021, We are in contact with Peter Auto.

LE MANS CLASSIC POSTPONED IN 2021
Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, Peter Auto and the Automobile Club de l’Ouest have decided to postpone the tenth edition of Le Mans Classic to July 1-2-3-4, 2021.
After having carefully studied different scenarios and possible dates, it was finally decided that postponing Le Mans Classic to 2021 was the best solution for this event in order to continue to bring together all lovers of the vintage car in optimal conditions.
Patrick Peter, Peter Auto: “Le Mans Classic is an international event that brings together close to 200,000 spectators in one place. As you can imagine, keeping this event at the original dates in the current context was therefore not an option. We have, in line with our partners and the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, decided to postpone Le Mans Classic to 2021 where everyone can take full advantage of this magnificent retrospective of the best hours of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.”
Pierre Fillon, Automobile Club de l’Ouest: “Le Mans Classic is a monument in the vintage auto world. Safety and quality are therefore key to the organisation of such a prominent event. We are momentarily unable to guarantee these essential requirements and postponement is our only option. We can now focus on 2021 and look forward to welcoming you all then. In the meantime, take care of yourselves and your loved ones.”

This decision probably won’t come as a surprise to any of you and I shall of course let you have more news as soon as I have it.

In the meantime, please put the 1st to the 5th July 2021 in your diary if you would still like to join me and the R5 / 991 & 992 Register contingent.

Yours,

Martin

So ignore the message heading, it is not postponed in 2021, it is deferred until 2021?

Hi Ralph,
Yes the 2020 event has been moved to 2021, clearly it was a typo by the ACO.

It is a shame that this fabulous event it won’t be going ahead this year but not really unexpected given the difficult and challenging times that we are currently facing.

Hi Dylan,
It would be great if you could join us next year, you would of course be welcome to join us.

Lycian Events are currently busy sorting out the issues as a result of moving the 24 hours to later in the year and cancelling Ferries for the Classic. Once the lockdown period is over get in touch with me and I’ll let you have the booking detail.

My email address is: martinghdavis@outloook.com

In the meantime stay safe and I hope that you have a good Bank Holiday weekend.

Yours,

Martin

Hi Dylan,

Further to my previous reply to your message regarding the revised date for the Classic Le Mans in 2021, I have spoken to Stephen and Joy at Lycian Events who are happy to take bookings for next year’s event.
Given our relationship with Lycian, for those of us that would like to transfer our deposit to the revised date next year, they have kindly agreed to hold the prices at the 2020 price for our group. Furthermore, they have also promised to hold our group pitch next to the track.
We will be setting off from the North West after work on Wednesday the 30th June 2021 for an overnight stay at the Travelodge in Portsmouth before catching the fast ferry to Cherbourg on the Thursday morning and returning on Monday the 5th July.
To book please contact Joy Fowell at Lycian Events on 01245 806264 or email Joy at: joy@lycianevents.com and make sure that you tell them that are joining Martin Davis’s Region 5 / 991 & 992 Register group. If you decide to book please let me know and I will add you to our WhatsApp group.

Yours,

Martin

Once again we will be setting off from the North West after work on Wednesday the 30th June 2021 for an overnight stay at the Travelodge in Portsmouth before catching the fast ferry to Cherbourg on the Thursday morning and returning on Monday the 5th July.

Appreciate this thread is for the Le Mans Classic in July, but due to the current pandemic, it may be cancelled/postponed.  I have made contact with Travel Destinations, in the vain hope of attending the postponed event in September.  It is a desperate attempt to participate one motor sport event, before winter descends upon us once more.  I was wondering if any other members were also looking to attend?

A Gammon
