Just wondered whether the fuel filter needs changing on a 997, some sources say yes some say no it’s a lifelong part, does anyone know? Can anyone shed any light?

Hi.
According to the Service Book, the Fuel Filter is one of a number of items listed as 'may require replacement depending on age and mileage'
Granted, this list also includes usually replaced consumables such as Spark Plugs and Brake Fluid, but it does also add 'Transmission Fluid' which most schools of thought would replace at c100,000 miles.
So, long story short, yes, the Fuel Filter should be replaced at some stage in the cars life. I reckon if your care is older than 10-12 years or higher than 100k miles, it'd be prudent to do that and / or the Transmission Fluid as well.

Side note - Changing the Fuel Filter is actually much easier on the 997 as it's in the engine bay, just behind the coolant tank, as opposed to under the car behind a load of pipework, as it was on the 996.

I’m concerned as on the web it said that changing the fuel filter could brake the fuel pump, do you know anything about this? My car has done 128 k and is 12 hrs old

David,

It's my understanding that after MY2002 Porsche moved the filter to a position inside the fuel tank, making it a "lifetime" filter that never needs to be changed. Your 997 should have this arrangement and it may be that the fuel tank would have to be removed to change the filter. Maybe you should speak to your local Porsche Dealership or Independent for first-hand advice?
