Oil Change intervals

Hi all.

I am new to the Porsche brand and can not seem to get my head around the two year service intervals. Is this too good to be true?

I have a 2ltr 718. The car is a few months away from being a year old and covered about 7k miles, most of which were on a recent tour around Europe.

My question is, should i change the oil and filter after a year or wait another year for the service interval. I am a bit old school an have always change the oil and filter after a year on all my old cars, whether performance cars or daily runners. Surely this is quite important as a new engine beds in to change the oil in case of debris from the running in period or am i just stuck in a bygone age?

There is a thread on this subject some where in the Cayman forum by BJ Innes....he had the same dilemma with his GTS 718 which also included track days ...the end result was even after oil analysis there was no benefit to changing oil after 1 year .I am sure some one will find the post and re post it .

The oil change is not as easy and as quick( ie 2hrs labour ) to do as say a 981 some thing to do with the turbos. hope this helps personally would leave till the 2 years .

 
I stick with the Porsche service schedule, the car is almost six years old and under their OPC warranty. I see no reason to either doubt them or spend on additional servicing.

At next month`s service it will have covered 15,000 miles since the last oil change (no top up`s), I intend requesting the oil and air filters for potential analysis.

As already mentioned on the above post from Brian (Kitchens), I am also an old school oil changer. For my own and other similar minded owners I had my engine oil analysed by Oil Lab after 7000 miles spirited rural road driving, and including 3 track days with extensive 100% throttle applications.

The oil analysis results were deemed satisfactory and the oil fit for further service. This was the first oil change on my 718 Cayman GTS as delivered from the factory. For your interest I reproduce the oil report below.

My opinion on interim oil changes now is, synthetic oils such as Mobil 1 0W-40 are extremely durable when used in modern high revving lean-burn engines. If you are doing many track day events per year (say 10-15), combined with a very high annual mileage, I would probably still change my engine oil annually. But that's just me.

For normal road driving and continental touring Mobil 1 engine oil will be perfectly safe for the 2 year scheduled service interval.

Here's mine.......

I find my Abarth 180 provides an excellent example of how turbo technology and ECU mapping have evolved between manufacturers. Abarth has turbo lag, and lots of it, in every gear, and at all revs. Jumping into my 718 GTS after a blast in the Abarth is a contrasting experience unlike any of the previous cars I've owned during the past 55 years.

This probably explains why the 718 2.5 4-pot turbo in my estimation is a masterpiece of automotive technology.

My 718 is just coming up to 12 months old, done 12,000 very enjoyable miles.

I made contact with supplying dealer to definitely check it was not due, they assured me it was fine. I had better put a few more miles on it!
