911 Swiss Alps road trip last August

Hello Folks,

Somebody was commenting recently that we don't post enough on what we've been up to with our fabulous motors. So I thought I'd share a recent experience I had taking the 991.2 to Switzerland on a bit of a mountain-pass bagging trip.

Inspired by the Curves Magazine book/short film, I'd wanted to go drive all the passes in a short trip since I got the 911. This August I finally managed to contrive the trip, sans wife and dog, whilst visiting Zurich for work :) Luckily a couple of Swiss colleagues there also fancied coming along, so I had a (very noisy) Jag F-Type and a Merc C43 AMG for company.

I took the ferry over from Hull and did a single day blast from Rotterdam down through Germany…

After a couple of days in Zurich I left via a pleasant trundle by the lake, the car still pretty clean at this point…

The next two days we were blessed with amazing weather over every pass. It started with views like this…

In all we took in the Klausen Pass, Susten Pass, Grimsel Pass, Furka Pass, Nufenen Pass and Gotthard Pass.

After a couple of days doing that lot my colleagues headed back to Zurich, but I headed east to Italy, via the Albula Pass (I was going to do the Flüela, but for some reason ended up on the Albula and discovered an accidental gem!)

For the route home I took in the Hahntennjoch in Austria (what a pass! If you ever manage it, I'd recommend going from the West to the East, opposite to what I did on this trip, as that's the most exciting ascent) after going over the obligatory Stelvio. I stayed in a hotel more or less at the base, so got up reasonably early to get over it before it turned into a circus.

On the way home back up through Germany I had some fun following a Ferrari Portafino. Despite having his roof down, it didn't stop him hitting 280kph, with me not far off his tail. The Carrera S is rock solid at that speed, something I was most pleased to find having feared for my life at anything past 160mph in a TVR Tuscan I owned years ago.

Here's a wee (3min) video of some of the scenery and fun we had …

This year the 911 has also done a trip to Italy for a two week holiday with the wife and dog, a track day at Cadwell Park (video also on the YouTubes channel) plus a couple of mucking about drift days at Oulton Park. Even after two and a half years of ownership, the car continues to impress me. What a piece of engineering; I love it.
