Hood Refurb/Dye?

Hi Everyone,

total Newbie here so please be gentle with me....
I have a Lapis Blue Boxster S with a blue hood.
It is in perfect order except it is faded in few patches. I spent an entire day cleaning, dyeing, and sealing it about 12 weeks ago using Renovo products.
It appears as bad as ever after a summer of use.
Could anyone point me in the direction of someone who could refurbish it or am I looking at a complete hood replacement. As I mentioned it is in good nick apart from the fading so if there was someone who would professionally refurb it, that would be the best option. I am based in North Yorkshire but am prepared to travel a bit to get the job done.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes,

Verner

Hi Verner
I’m surprised that Renovo has not produced a perfect and lasting result. Are you 100% that you followed the instruction exactly? I’ve used Renovo for decades and the only poor result was when I thought I could take a shortcut.
I’m sure any business that refurbishes car interiors and hoods etc. would do the job for you.
Which area do you live in? This will help people in making recommendations.
Regards
Roger

Hi Roger,
I definitely followed it to the letter.....took me about 16-18 hours cleaning, dyeing and sealing it.
I live in North Yorkshire, close to Ripon/Harrogate.
I would dearly love to get it done professionally if possible but can't seem to find anyone who would/can do it.

Any recommendations from anyone would be gratefully received,

Thanks Roger,

Verner

Hi Verner
I’m pleased to see that your, I guess, a member of R7.
May I suggest that you speak with A S Pickering in Bradford. They are a highly respected firm that’s been in business for decades. I’m sure they will be able to help you https://www.aspickering.co.uk/

Hi Roger,

Thanks for the kind reply.

Thank again,

Hi again Verner,
R7 is Region 7, the Yorkshire Region of Porsche Club GB. We hold a club night, a social gathering on the third Wednesday of every month at the Smiths Arms, Beckwithshaw, Harrogate, starting at 8pm or a little a little earlier and if you attend as I hope you will, you’ll receive a warm welcome. Graham Lovis and Jane Rigby who are CoG* members, have a 987.2 Boxster and are the leaders. Introduce yourself to them and they will ensure that you’re well looked after. I sometimes attend that club night, however, we have north, south, east and west club nights and west, near Leeds is my nearest. All members of PCGB irrespective of their ‘home region’ are welcome at our club nights and events.

* R7 - Yorkshire is run by a group known as the Coordinators Group.

For up to date information please see the R7 section of the PCGB Forum.

I hope you are able to get your hood sorted out to your satisfaction, a new hood should not be necessary in my opinion.

Best wishes
Roger

Hi Roger,

Smith's Arms??? I used to have Sunday lunch in there when I lived in Harrogate. Not a million miles from here! Small world.
I would love to attend and meet all you all. Excellent.
Many thanks for the kind advice.
See you in Beckwithshaw as soon as I can make it.

:)

Best wishes,

Hi Verner,
Welcome. You have suggested that you've followed the instructions (as others have mentioned) but there are a few things to consider:
1, it's been a lovely summer (and still ongoing until this week). If your car is outside, it's going to have an effect on it ad speed up any aging process (even after treatment)
2, your hood may have suffered 'irreparable' sunlight damage and fading at a guess and you may end up chasing your tail. How old is it? I'm guessing it could be as much as 13 years old? That's a lot of sun if it's been kept outside over those years
3, I always put two coats of waterproofer (Fabisil Gold) on, but mine is kept garaged

It is of course possible, that hood specialists have a wider availability of dyes etc.

As I found out with my E36s in the past, blue fades quite badly (i also knew less about car care back then) and it is one of the pitfalls of ragtops IMO

Either way, who needs the hood up any way?! :)

Hi Mark,

thanks for the kind reply.
My car lives in the garage whilst not being driven as I have only one off-road parking space plus my double garage.
So it's limited to the amount of sun it would see, well in the year I have owned her. I think the roof now looks much worse that before I dyed it.
I may give it another go with the Renovo/A N Other.... before biting the bullet and looking at hood replacement.

I understand what you mean about the blue fading quicker.

Thanks for the advice.

Best wishes,

Verner

Okay, then certainly the hood age will play a factor. One of the reasons I didnt use Renovo, was the feedback from people (random Internet people, if you do a search) that this has happened to, not just you. A fair few have had bad experiences with it, others have had great success. Just one of those things I guess.

I know prep will be key though and one thing if you do do it again, clean and scrub that hood as best you can, to get any product (and dirt) out of it, before trying again. You may even try a MPC (multi purpose cleaner/universal cleaner) rather than car shampoo, to really make sure. If you use it strong/neat, just make sure to keep it rinsed off the paint work (just in case) if you do

Hi Roger,

I took your kind advice.
She's booked in next week for a new hood from your recommendation.

Thank you,

Verner

Finally took the plunge and got a new Blue Mohair Roof/Hood fitted.

Pleased with it....

Just got the Water Drip Trays replaced and the B-Pillar Seals done too...
That should keep her water tight for the winter.
Great job by YCP.

Hi Vernet
Could you let us know the cost breakdown for the new hood, drip trays and b pillar seal please?
My Boxster S has a blue hood and I’m thinking to follow suit!
Thanks
Raj

Hi Raj,

Blue Mohair Roof was £1200.00 fitted from AS Pickering, Bradford.
Had several quotes much cheaper but they came highly recommended.

B-Pillar Seal £170.00 from OPC (Leeds)
Water Drip Trays £70.00 each from OPC (Leeds).

Hope this helps?

Best wishes,

Verner

Thanks for the breakdown! My Brother is currently looking for a new roof and he is based in West Yorkshire so I'll let him know about AS pickering.
