911E 2.4 clutch pedal weight

I have bought a RHD 1972 911E. It has rebuilt gearbox and new clutch but specialist tells me they cannot lessen the very heavy clutch and this is a symptom of the RHD models. Is this right and is there any fix to lessen the weight?
 
Hi Buzz, the early 911 models do need quite a hard push on the clutch pedal to operate the gears. They did not really make it any easier until the 3.2 Carrera into which they fitted hydraulic operation of the clutch. In fact Porsche introduced the Sportomatic model to help in the clutch operation for the early cars.
However you may find replacing the clutch cable may help as the inner and outer parts of the cable do become dry of lubrication after a few decades. It is not possible to grease the cable in situ and if you fit a new one it could be greased or oiled before fitting. That will ease the clutch operation by a small amount as does lubricating the contraption that is the RHD conversion for the pedals. (they were designed as a LHD car)
The only other thought is that you might need a trip to the gym to beef up those leg muscles.
 
ManY thanks Robin. This very helpful. I had a 1980 SC which although heavy the clutch was lighter than on the 911E. I will follow your suggestions.....

911s they had been converted to hydraulic slave and master cylinders
looked very professional ask Google

Hi Buzz. I have never found the 2.4E clutch heavy but maybe I am just used to it. There is no reason I know of that RHD should feel different to LHD. All the bushes in the pedal box need to be in good order, as does the cable noted above plus the linkages correctly adjusted. One thing that can effect the feel is the clutch fitted - performance clutches have stronger spring plates so feel stiffer. I am dropping into my specialist this weekend so will ask him if there is anything else.
 
My 73T was LHD when I bought it 30 years ago.
the clutch as stock and I drove the car for a few years this way.
I converted the car to rhd using Porsche parts and the clutch was no different in action or weight.

About 18 years ago I fitted a 3.2 engine and box which had a 915 box with the mech clutch and assistor spring. This made a significant difference to the weight, again, stock clutch parts.

I think you can buy the parts to adapt the magnesium gearbox single arm clutch arm to the later 3.2 design which was not hydraulic.
the hydraulic master and slave system came in in late 3.2 production when the G50 gearbox was fitted.
I think the VW boys have a Hyd clutch system too.
A new cable will make a big difference and not hard to replace and accurately adjust to factory spec. Whichever mechanism is used.

Here is the 3.2 spring assisted mechanism.
You will need the 3.2 clutch pivot arm and to fit that you have to remove the box.
I've seen these on ebay and you will need the cast side bracket too that the clutch cable anchors to.
The picture is of a 3.2 / 915 box.
