Bore Scoring Warranty Claim

My 997.1 C4S Cabrio Tiptronic has just been diagnosed with the dreaded Bore Scoring on No6 & 4 cylinders. It is currently with Sid Malik @ Porsche Torque in Uxbridge, the engine is stripped and has just been inspected by an 'independent' engineer on behalf of my warranty company - Autoprotect - who have just contacted me to reject the claim - surprise, surprise!! In order to challenge their rejection I need to find my own Independent Engineer to inspect the engine on my behalf whilst it's still dismantled - I have about a week or so before the rebuild starts. Has anyone got any suggestions or had any success in similar circumstances? The car has done 71,500 miles and a full service history. Thanks, Justin.

Justin,

You could try Porsche Inspections https://www.porscheinspections.com/ which was set up by Peter Morgan (a well known Club member and Porsche book author), who's now retired. Although they're involved mostly in pre-purchase inspection work, I'm sure that they've seen plenty of bore scoring issues and would be able to give you an unbiased report.

Porsche warranty paid out near £10 k for my bore score repair and rebuild a few years ago on a 987S
no questions so I think you have a very good case

A few questions. When did you buy the car and was it from a dealer? What's the service history like?
On what basis did they reject your claim - wear and tear? Have they told you to get another opinion which they'd consider or is that your call?

A Porsche warranty would pay out on this (that's the main reason people get it) but they have very different terms and conditions and max payouts on such issues compared to 3rd party warranty companies so I wouldn't expect that to be any kind of signal for you.

Hi Motorhead, thanks for your suggestion, I spoke to Porsche Inspections just now as you suggested. Unfortunately they don't get involved in disputed warranty claims but were able to give me some good advice - mainly not to give up and take it all the way. In their experience the insurance based warranty companies will rarely change their minds until forced to do so, hoping we'll just give up and go away!! I'll post how I get on. Justin.

Hi Dylan1, Unfortunately my warranty isn't with Porsche, it's from a company called Autoprotect which is an insurance based warranty subject to their own terms and conditions as well as their interpretation of them! I have a claim limit of £5,000 which would be close to half the cost.

Hi Rodney, Thanks for your post. I bought my car from an independent Porsche specialist in August last year - I don't intend to identify them at this stage - they provided a 6 month Autoprotect Gold warranty with the car and I paid an additional premium to extend that warranty for an extra 6 months. The car has a fully stamped service book from OPC's to 2017 and independent Porsche specialist since, also a number of service and repair receipts. I have requested a copy of the engineers report, which the supplying dealer is obtaining for me, but as I understand it at this stage they are quoting the good old 'wear and tear' copout, and I'm disputing this at 71,500 miles and correctly serviced and no over-rev or other issues from the onboard computer memory. Both Oil and Water temperatures have always been spot on and rock solid as has Oil pressure. It was their suggestion for me to get another engineers opinion and that they would 'consider' it.
