Front struts! Done to death but can't find answers!

Hi all. My front shocks are the originals and are showing some wear after last MOT so I'm looking to replace.

I know this is done to death but I can't find a definitive answer.

I've decided to go for an full set of Bilstien B6 and keep the standard springs. I'm aware that the front struts will need modifying.

Does anyone know of a source where I can get pre-made struts already modified for B6's?

If not, I'm happy to remove and replace them myself and have the replacement collars already. I have a friendly machine shop that can modify and weld them too.

My question is, does anyone know how much needs to come off the top of the current struts to replace with the threaded collar? I need to let the machine shop know before they cut the strut, weld the collar and dress it before powder coating?

Thanks Bruce. I have seen the video and it's really good (helped me convince my machine shop that they can do the job easily). However it isn't clear where exactly to cut from (even though the measurement is quoted to the nearest 0.1mm!). Somebody has asked the question in the comments section but the answer was that there is a PDF....which I can't find details of.

It's a very good wrtie up of the process. However, it's still not absolutely clear what the cut depth should be as I don't know the dimensions for the collars that Beamishnz has had made. I assume they're the same as the Sportwagon ones but don't know for sure.
Will keep posting as and when I find something definitive.

If you have duplicates of the sportwagen adaptive collars, then the 44.5mm cut is correct. I have another set of adapted struts in being powder coated at the moment. You must make sure the B6 insert is fully seated and the collar correctly tightened to the stipulated torque. I bought the Bilstein tool to do mine.
The set in for powder coating is the third pair I have done, I do them on an exchange basis if you are interested although it does seem you are fairly well sorted from your post.

the finish is all about the supplied blanks though
 
944er-teile.de always have a dozen sets of converted struts on the shelf for people in need.
 
Just got the struts off the car and they're off to a specialist (Nickson Motorsport) being refurbished and upgraded to the Bilstein B6's.

However, whilst removing the strut assembly (one of the easiest jobs I've ever tackled on my car I have to say!) the earth cable from the yellow connector block to the strut broke away very close to the connector block.

Does anyone know if the connector block can be opened up or even better, anyone have a spare?!

the block is part of the loom, the earth is for the brake pad wear sensors, to provide a path to ground as the rest of the leg is insulated,

the looms are next to seriously expensive or NLA

what side was it Tom and I will check Porsche


 
think the part you are after could be
944 612 107 00 described as an Additional Cable for Brake pad wear display, ÂŁ138.98 NON abs
944 612 111 00 "" ÂŁ114.50 with ABS
 
Hi Waylander, that's brilliant! I've been scratching my head trying to work out the part number! The parts catalogue doesn't seem to offer much help. It's the passenger side that's failed.

Are they deffinately NLA? Where do you get the price from? I picked a few parts up from my OPC earlier this week and the guy said that Porsche have upped their game for 944 spares recently.

Going to try to get my hands on one if possible whilst I'm replacing the shocks.
 
I've got another snag and would appreciate some input!

Basically I need to track down two of these connectors (or equivalent). There are plenty about but I'm lost when it comes to auto electrics so no idea what spec I need.

Part number appears to be N 017 505 4 but I can't find a spec or an eqivalent that I'm confident enough to buy.

Any motor factors usually sell those small DIY packs of useful bits including cable terminations like your picture-you just then need a cable stripper tool(preferable but sharp pliers etc can be used) & crimping pliers .

The problem isn't finding a part to fit, I agree, there are tonnes out there!

The problem is that once you look into them they are all rated for different current loading. Having measured the part it has a 6.7mm hole in it so I guess the stud is an M6. However, once I look into the options available for 6mm+ connectors, they are rated for 50A. Is that going to be enough? Or perhaps it will it cause too much resistance and I end up damaging the ECU?

I appreciate it is just a sensing circuit so probably very low current draw but like I said, I don't have a clue when it comes to auto electrics so just wanted confirmation from someone that knows their stuff!
 
Well the DIY crimp connectors usually come in 3 sizes-Red for small wire-Blue for general standard wire & Yellow for the thicker wire with the central hole in this type of connector larger each colour-
I would say you probably need the yellow ones -it's easy to see the hole size if you look at an appropriate pack.

all those connectors are available from opc, even the pins in the 22 pin connectors for the dash plugs are available
 
Thanks ks Waylander. I've had my 944 for just over 10 years now and I'm amazed by how supportive Porsche UK have become. Useless when I bought the car but they're so supportive of 944 owners now.

I actually thought I'd try that route today and straight away, yep parts available and arriving in a few days. Amazing.

Not only that but they're stocking and displaying 944 merchandise too! Incredible!
