Clunking PDK

Hi All
Drove my 991.1 to work this morning and having just set-off (at low speed in traffic so the engine wasn't up to temp) I could really notice an audible clunk/bang sound each time the PDK switched from 2nd to 1st as I crawled along
Just wondered if this is maybe sign of a PDK problem anyone had experience of?
My car is a MY2012, has done 27k miles and is under warranty
Cheers all
Rich

I would bring this to the attention of your PC under warranty. In a higher mileage car, it would indicate a fluid change being necessary, but this is normally only specified after 60k miles or so.

Hi Rich,

I had the same issue with my 991.1.

I recorded the sound and took it into my local dealer and they managed to replicate the sound and fixed the problem. They said my Porsche needed a software update and once they upgraded the software the noise went away! Admittedly, I thought this a bit odd as the noise sounded more mechanical but to be fair to Porsche it fixed the problem and it’s been over a 18 months and it hasn’t come back!

I too have a similar problem on my 2016 991.2 Carrera 2. There is a clunk when shifting down to 1st but that tends to be spasmodic. What happens all the time is that between speeds of between 8 and 10mph, in 2nd gear, when lifting on and off the throttle there is a most definite clunk. It’s not shifting gear at the time.

It‘s been into OPC Reading last week, and I managed to replicate the sound on a test drive with a technician in the car. They subsequently found an oil leak from the PDK box. The box has been "powder coated” to find out where it’s coming from. I’ve to take it back in after 500 miles to see if they can find out where it’s coming from. They’ve also topped up the transmission oil level.

Driving back from the dealership yesterday, sadly the noise hasn’t disappeared.

I will post further updates when I have them.

yes that it sounds very similar to what I am hearing, although it only happens when the card is cold for me
Will defo take it to the OPC when I get chance

Further update on my 991.2.

It's booked in again at OPC Reading on 8th November to review status. I have told them that the problem is not solved, and got an interesting reply - would you be able to leave the car with us for a while if we need to replace the PDK?

Further update after the visit.

Regards

Two further developments on my clunking PDK (991.2).

I took it into Reading OPC a couple of weeks to check fluid levels and also perform a software update. Not good news; it didn't make any difference. They did report that the fluid level in one part of the gearbox was a lot higher than the other. Apparently Porsche 991.2 PDK has at least two distinct oil chambers in the PDK box.

On the back of this news, I was told that they are going to replace the PDK.

I took it in this morning to have the PDK box replaced - the unit itself is around £6,100 before VAT and excluding fitting and consumable costs!! Very, very glad to have a two year warranty. I pick it up again on Saturday, and will post a further update.

My own personal opinion is that there has been a hydraulic fluid leak into the gearbox, coming from one of the actuation lines that each drive an individual actuating fork. It might have been the drive line for 2nd gear hence the clunking as the synchro ring didn't engage completely. I am by no means an expert, but it does look to be a credible possibility. The OPC don't seem to want to commit to a cause, which I guess I understand, but its a little surprising that there's no real sense of curiosity from them.

I don't suppose I will ever find out what's actually gone wrong, but its good to get it sorted under warranty.

Service from Reading OPC continues to be very good.

I hope this helps others who might have a similar issue
