Cayman R - Engine Mounts Question?

I have noticed on a few occasions during spirited drives a lot of movement and inertia from the engine, that feels like it is slightly unsettling the balance of the car during quick changes of direction and hard cornering, this seems at odds with the rest of the car.
I understand that the OEM bushes are soft and allow a fair bit of movement to contain and supress NVH and add to the fact they may be starting to wear (2012 Cayman R 15,000 miles)
I'm interested in fitting polyurethane engine mount bush inserts (road spec) to lessen the movement, but not encourage too much NVH from engine.
Has anyone tried this? with positive or negative results? and any recommended brand to use?

Thanks in advance

Gordy

Hi Gordy,

Sorry I can't answer your question directly but I assume that you're contemplating changing the front (engine) elastomeric mount rather than the hydro-mounts which support the transmission? Although your R is low mileage it's now about 7-years old, so there will be some deterioration in all the mounts owing to ageing of the elstomeric content, although to what effect is difficult to predict. Porsche will have chosen the compounds based upon driveability, refinement and durability, so to change any mount to non-OEM will have some effect, however small.

Certainly you could just change the engine mount to a stiffer version but I would have thought that the transmission mounts would be more instrumental in exercising control of the powertrain, which is what you're trying to achieve, and is what Porsche do with their Active Drivetrain Mounts (PADM) which unfortunately weren't available on the 987-series cars. Changing the engine mount alone could well be beneficial marginally in locating the engine more securely, but there could well be an impact upon refinement (NVH).

I think that MrDemon may have fitted an uprated engine mount on his 987 Spyder, so you could try PM-ing him for comments and advice.

HI

yes I have fitted the centre transmissionmount and not the sides.

I have this and it works a treat.

http://www.function-first.com/products/engine-trans/engine-mount-insert

I went for yellow, some one fitted black and it did vibrate for road use, orange is new but I don't see the point over oem, but I have no issues with yellow.

maybe buy some oem new engine mounts to go with it, I did not fit aftermarket there as most reports for after market say they are a bit harsh.

again function first use a filled oem ones so softer than RSS ones and the like.

That’s great guys,

just what I needed to hear, tbh at the moment my car is for mainly fast road use and hopefully the odd track day.

I had been looking at the Function First products, so yellow or orange inserts sound like a good option for me, willing to try the yellow ones if you reckon they don’t introduce much harshness to the car overall for road driving. Might have a look at gearbox mounts at a later date.

Thanks again for the advice,

much appreciated
