Squeaky brakes!!!!!

Hi all,

New 991.1 is great, fantastic sound from the sport exhaus, but the brakes are driving me slowly mad. Ok cold but when warm after 10 miles plus they start sqeaking! Any similar experiences?

Its going into Porsche to sort a few minor things so they can sort it (maybe) but pre armed is better....

Cheers

Rhys

Hey Rhys, Brembo/Porsche brakes can be a bit of a bit of a sod for squeaking. It's normally fixable with copperslip and a calliper clean, but ask your OPC to check the callipers are not worn where the pad is close to the body of the calliper.

Also, go easy with the pressure washer/wheel cleaning chemicals on the brakes too, as this washes away lubricants.

Hope this helps

Jim

Take a look on YouTube as Porsche posted a video to explain the squeaking... apparently it's harmonic's .....

Sorry just to add I find a good track day does help eliminate said squeak....

Same, a spirited drive can often fix it. Standing the car on it's nose is also a huge giggle!

Hi Rhys,

So what was the verdict, as I'm still experiencing squeaky brakes which is really annoying especially when I have the roof down, as you can really hear the squealing sound?!

Regards

Hi everyone. A new member, pleased to get a Boxter S but not happy about squealing brakes, had new pads put in, no change. Will try copper grease on back of pads. May be back.

Hi all,
My first time posting, but I may be able to help with this one. I recently bought a 991 62' Carrera S,and had the break squeak problem. I first tried new discs and pads - Brembo Pads, that didnt help and I still had the squeak. Then I took it back to the garage an Independant who I have always used, they had a look and sorted it out at no further charge. They changed the pads to Textar, but Importantly with the break pad Harmoniser built into the rear pads. These pads were about £40 more expensive but they did the trick. The Harmoniser is like two round weights that stick out at the back of the pad. They are commonly available and worked for me.

I've never heard of a brake pad harmoniser and Google is not very informative either.
What exactly is it and how does it work?
Regards,

Clive

The right side brakes on my 991.1 started squealing and all it took was a couple of pressure washes (no soap) to sort. I also found that after washing the car that it'd help to take it for a short drive to dry off the brakes as it seemed that the little bit of surface rust that forms if you don't drive it regularly from the water would certainly contribute to the brake squeal.

Me neither Clive.

Bob says: The Harmoniser is like two round weights that stick out at the back of the pad. I thought all brake pads were flat so that the hydraulic pistons could press evenly against them. Of course I am old and things may ahve moved on ......

It would be interesting to see a picture to ID just what this is.

Hello again, no real solution to squeaky brakes other than be prepared to brake a bit hard at times to take the glaze off the pads.( Porche specialist? Advice)

Wish I had read this before going back to my OPC this week. They said the same as above - brakes need to get hot to scorch off the corrosion that causes the squeaking. Well, I have a Porsche experience on Friday and Brands track day following Monday. If that doesn't sort it, I am not sure what will...
