987.1 Ignition not coming on

Just popped out to the car to program the SatNav before going off on our hols tomorrow morning at crack of dawn and... the ignition wouldn't come on. Key went in, initial dash LED displays came on (speed, etc.) but turning the key to the first position, nothing. Key in, key out, key in, key out, door opened and shut, buttons pressed, pretty much any combination of things you can think of, nothing for about 5 minutes of trying. Then, literally seconds away from giving up and calling the RAC, it worked. Started fine, ran for a good few minutes, seems fine. Off, key out, key in, it's all fine.

Anyone seen this before? It's a little worrying. Don't really want this happening tomorrow at 4am.

Sometimes the steering lock can cause problems if it's not quite engaged. I find moving the steering wheel to make sure it's properly locked, with the keys out of the ignition avoids such problems.
Happy holidays !

Switch on the clutch pedal?
press the clutch pedal down hard before you turn the key.
unless it is an auto, you don't say what the transmission is.
hope you get away tomorrow ok.
