2005 987 2.7 Disc and Pad upgrade

Hi, following a Porsche service I'm advised we require a front disc and pad replacement; I'm considering an upgrade, perhaps Brembo and non Porsche Dealer to fit, any advice welcome please...

Euro car parts currently have pagid brake discs and Brembo brake pads on offer at £110 ( using the discount code MID 60 )

Please get a second opinion on whether they even need replacing first as they may have more life left in them than you think.

Thank you, they did quote 1mm of wear to tolerance on the discs and 3mm on the pads. I'm gently working my way around the vehicle and tidying things a little so figured I'd make some improvements here and there. It would appear that for my model (05 2.7 987) though there aren't any real improvements on Porsche supplied parts, ie Brembo...

Brembo parts will not be an upgrade over the Porsche items. Perfectly fine as are Pagid, but not better.

Other than you may feel that you might as well take the opportunity I don’t know why you feel you need to upgrade the brakes since the standard brakes, at least on my 987.1 Boxster S are phenomenal if one has to make an emergency stop.
In comparison with many more everyday cars, which have more servo assistance, the brake pedal does need a harder push but much more feel, that’s what sports cars are like in my experience.

I can can understand why you might want to upgrade if you plan to do frequent track days when you might want to fit cooling ducts and race brake fluid plus race quality brake pads which may not be great for ‘normal’ driving.

It is of course your car and your decision. I’m simply offering my thoughts. ??

Thank you for your response; our car has covered very few miles ‘17k‘ and some of the assets including brakes are a little corroded and generally expired by age, I think I’ll replace with standard Porsche brake discs and pads, your advice and opinion is appreciated and considered. Thank you again...

Original parts are Sebro discs and Textar pads. If you buy Porsche parts, they'll be the same, but with the Porsche logo stamped on them. You can save yourself some money by just buying the Sebro discs and Textar pads. ECP almost always have a sale on.

Cheers,
Bryan

That’s great information, thank you, I’ll act in this later today. As new Members we’ve been delighted at the positive constructive responses, thanks to all the members advice on this question.

Jennifer,

Just to add to Bryan's comment, Sebro and Textar do indeed supply original parts to Porsche but someone on here in the trade mentioned that although they are of a very high quality, the OEM parts aren't exactly the same spec as Porsche's own.

I see that Euro Car Parts have a sale on at the moment with 50% off pads and discs, so now's a good time to grab a bargain.

Have a look at Boxanet, there are some good threads on upgrades on 987 brake upgrades.

Textar do indeed supply pads to Porsche, so these will be the same, discs however are not supplied by Sebro, they do supply Porsche some discs for very rare and early air cooled 911. SHW supply discs to Porsche and only to Porsche, you cant get them outside OPC.

Thank you, that's interesting and makes me think that the saving could be a foolish one in the Grand Scheme! This project will be carried out in October and the forum has proved valuable indeed, thank you again...

Jennifer,

Whilst taking on board Matthew's comments I wouldn't worry about fitting Textar, Sebro or Brembo parts on your car, and you'll make a significant cost saving compared with genuine Porsche parts (for which you'll get a 10% discount as a Club member if you choose that route).

If you're planning to use a decent Porsche Independent to fit the parts then they'll be able to advise you on choice of components. They have a lot of experience in this respect and I suspect that they're more used to working on older cars such as yours than the Porsche dealerships.
