991.2 brake improvements for trackdays?

Hello folks,

Does anyone know if it's possible to make any incremental improvements to the brakes on a 991.2 Carrera S – I'm wondering if different brake fluid, different pads, or maybe even alternative brake lines are worthwhile?

I have no idea if these sorts of minor things are even available to such a recent car, or if they'd really improvement braking longevity.

Any experience or thoughts welcomed.

All these things are available for your 911, it's just a case of deciding what (if anything) is desirable for your use. The vehicle is course already designed for spirited driving.
Try a couple of track days and see how the brakes perform. If you are experiencing fade and/or spongy pedal then you could consider changing the pads and/or hydraulic fluid etc.
Bear in mind any non-approved modifications you may make could have extended warranty and future residual value implications.

Thanks for the quick response. Aye, I've done a few track days in it already – 7 or 8 maybe. I'm on my second set of discs, and I'm noticing a deepening pedal after about 15 minutes. On the original discs it would last 25 minutes without a problem – the replacements are original equipment, as fitted by my dealers.

I've had it since new and am keen to keep it within warranty; this is why I was wondering if folks had any specific input about modifications. I have the oil changed more than regularly after I've done a couple of days. I'm not fussed about resale values, I don't plan on ever getting rid of it :)

Sounds like pad fade, shorter time due to improved retardation and more heat. Try some harder pads such Pagid RS29 - they're fine for road use too. Won't be a problem with warranty either.

I would also seriously consider a brake fluid change. The brake fluid is often overlooked. Brake fluid is hydroscopic, overtime the fluid absorbs moisture in the air when the brakes get hot the moisture that the fluid is holding turns into steam and your pedal will get longer & longer & if you’re not careful you will lose it all together

Just to add clarity, brake fluid is actually hygroscopic. Hydroscopic is the ability to see under water - but no worries, the two are often confused! [;)][:D]

I didn't mention changing the fluid because I don't think that's the OP's current problem.

As one who has suffered boiling brake fluid on many occasions, you certainly don't confuse it with pad fade when it happens. :ROFLMAO:

How would I know if brake fluid was the issue and not pads? What's the feeling you'd find under foot? Thanks!
 
Fade - brakes still work, but become less effective with longer pedal and requiring greater pressure. Brakes return after cooling.
Fluid boil - brakes don't work, foot goes to the floor. After cooling, brakes may return but not usually as efficient with longer, spongy feel to the pedal due to fluid vapour contamination.
You can buy a fluid tester from the usual online sites.

I agree that Pagid RS29 are good but can were more squeally on my 991.1 TT. This time I used GT3 pads as they too are good on track and a direct fit.
 
It sounds like fade was what I experienced at Cadwell recently. I like Tony’s follow up post recommending GT3 pads - I’ll have a word with the dealers about that and see if they’ll fit them.

Not sure the 991.2 callipers are the same as those on a GT3.

Try this resource which lists all Brembo Part # (a common reference # for all pad manufacturers)


 
Hello folks!


Just realised (bit slow, me) that I never did update this thread with my findings.

I went with Pagid RSL29s and they're fantastic! Managed 35 minutes in one stint at Donington club day last year before I was tired ?? Brakes were still fine.

Mind, discs are now starting to show cracks in the holes. So next set will be some aftermarket things with grooves I think. Will update this thread again once I've done that. Car now out of warranty, time to have some fun with more mods (Litchfield suspension tweaks have been a revelation).

Got 29s on my turbo. Love 'em! Can get a bit squealy sometimes though...Have been recommended to try 15s next time around.
